Bo Nix Likely to Sit Friday vs. Vikings as Payton Rests Starters

Bo Nix will most likely watch Denver's preseason finale from the sideline. Head coach Sean Payton said Wednesday that his quarterback "probably" won't play Friday against the Vikings, and he joked that he'd rather not run through the rest of the depth chart while he was at it — a strong hint that the starters are getting the night off with kickoff scheduled for 9 p.m. ET.
This is a rest call, not a scare. Nix already got his preseason reps last week, playing 14 snaps against the Packers and looking every bit the guy who fractured his ankle in January's divisional-round win over Buffalo. He finished 6-of-9 for 76 yards and a score, including a 21-yard touchdown to rookie back RJ Harvey, before handing the offense off with a field goal on his second series.
For fantasy managers, the key word is "health." The ankle that ended his 2025 postseason clearly isn't a lingering concern if Payton feels comfortable shutting him down for the summer. Nix sat the preseason opener, checked the box against Green Bay, and now gets protected — exactly the sequence you want to see from a QB you're drafting.

Nix has started all 17 games in each of his first two NFL seasons, and in 2025 he completed 63.4 percent of a league-leading 612 attempts for 3,931 yards, 25 touchdowns and 11 picks. Nix's mobility is the separator. That rushing floor is why he's a legitimate mid-tier QB1 and not just a matchup-based streamer, and it's worth remembering the touchdown Friday's absence takes off the exhibition stat sheet went to Harvey — our RB20, who quietly averaged +3.3 fantasy points over his final five games of 2025 versus his season line. That connection is one to monitor.
Bottom line: don't overthink this. A veteran head coach resting his established starter in Week 3 of the preseason is the least alarming news you'll read all August.
