Browns DE Alex Wright Carted Off With Lower-Leg Injury at Practice

Cleveland's already-thin pass rush took another hit Thursday when defensive end Alex Wright was carted off the practice field with a lower-leg injury. Coach Todd Monken didn't have an update afterward, which is never the reassuring kind of silence.

Wright is coming off the best year of his career: 37 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss across 14 games last season (2025-26). The Browns valued that production enough to hand him a three-year, $33 million extension back in November, so this is a meaningful player, not a camp-body afterthought.

The timing stings for a defense that gutted its front. Cleveland dealt away Myles Garrett this offseason, blowing a crater in the edge rotation, and the team's plan to patch it never materialized. They kicked the tires on Jadeveon Clowney, Za'Darius Smith and A.J. Epenesa, and all three walked without signing.

That leaves Wright as one of the few known quantities off the edge — and now his availability is a question mark before we even know the severity. A lower-leg injury serious enough to require a cart is worth treating cautiously until Cleveland puts a label on it.

The Fantasy Fallout

For IDP managers, Wright was shaping up as a sneaky sleeper. With Garrett gone, the sack opportunity was going to funnel through fewer bodies, and Wright's 12 TFL last season (2025-26) point to a player who's already living in the backfield. A healthy Wright in that role is a legitimate weekly starter in tackle-and-sack scoring formats.

Right now, though, you can't draft blind. Hold off on locking him into your late rounds until the Browns confirm what they're dealing with. If it's minor, he's back on the board as a value edge with a wide-open depth chart. If it's a multi-week or season issue, this is the kind of news that turns a mid-round IDP flier into a redraft afterthought — so watch the injury report before you commit.
