Cowboys Patch a Battered Secondary With Thomas and Austin

The Cowboys' secondary is running on fumes, and Dallas spent Tuesday trying to plug the leaks. The team agreed to terms with safety Juanyeh Thomas and cornerback Alex Austin after a workout that also included DBs Shemar Bartholomew and Tyrek Funderburk plus linebacker Germaine Pratt. Austin is headed for the practice squad; Thomas's landing spot — active roster or practice squad — hasn't been confirmed.
The urgency isn't hard to trace. Safeties Malik Hooker (fractured forearm) and P.J. Locke (foot) are already on injured reserve, Jalen Thompson (hamstring) is set to join them this week, and cornerbacks Shavon Revel (knee/ankle) and Cobie Durant (hamstring) are both banged up. That's five defensive backs compromised — a full-blown depth crisis in Dallas.
Thomas is a familiar face. He originally signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent back in 2022 and has appeared in 36 career games, logging 62 tackles, five passes defensed and a forced fumble. He's not a splash addition, but he knows the building, which matters when you're trying to get someone game-ready in a hurry.
Austin brings a bit more starting experience. A seventh-round Bills pick in 2023, the corner has bounced through New England and Houston, playing 29 games with six starts. His line — 31 tackles, eight passes defensed and an interception — reads like a rotational depth piece, which is exactly what a practice squad slot signals here.
The Fantasy Fallout
For IDP managers, neither of these signings moves the needle on its own. Thomas and Austin are depth insurance, not immediate producers, and Thomas's uncertain roster status makes him even harder to bank on right now. The real signal is what all these injuries mean for the players around them — snaps have to go somewhere, and whoever ends up starting in this thinned-out group inherits a volume-friendly situation.
The move to make: keep both names on your watch list, not your roster. If Thomas lands on the active roster and injuries force him into a starting role, revisit — a safety playing meaningful snaps in a depleted secondary can flirt with streamer value.
