High-upside QB1 on paper, but a one-game sample before the bye.

Key numbers
  • McCarthy led 3 scoring drives in last 10 minutes
  • Winston: 957 yds, 7 TD in 5 starts (2026)
  • McCarthy is our QB4 overall, rank #9
  • McCarthy: 243 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT so far in 2026
  • Giants host Texans Sunday, then hit their bye

The quarterback shuffle in East Rutherford is over, at least for now. John Harbaugh named J.J. McCarthy the Giants' starter for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans, pulling the plug on Jameis Winston after the third-year pro came off the bench last week and sparked three scoring drives in the final 10 minutes. With Jaxson Dart lost for the season, McCarthy — acquired in a trade from Minnesota — gets a full month of install behind him and a real shot to run the offense.

Winston didn't exactly torch the sheets on his way out. He put up 957 passing yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions across five appearances, going 2-2-1 as the fill-in starter. Harbaugh was careful not to frame it as a demotion, praising Winston for winning games, but he made the direction clear: McCarthy's skill set gives the offense options Winston's doesn't.

Why Now

Harbaugh leaned on the learning curve to explain the timing. He said McCarthy needed weeks to absorb a new playbook after the trade — joking that not even a returning Tom Brady could step in and start cold for a new team. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and QB coach Brian Callahan have reportedly signed off, telling Harbaugh the former first-rounder has the game plan down and the scheme is now tilting toward his strengths.

There's a sneaky-big game on the line here. A win over Houston would push the Giants to a possible 4-2-1 and the top of the NFC East, with their bye arriving right after. McCarthy told reporters he was honored to get the Week 7 nod and planned to live in the film room this week — the right noises, even if the production is a blank page.

The Fantasy Fallout

Here's where it gets interesting. Our model has McCarthy ranked #9 overall and QB4 at the position — a sky-high valuation that bakes in his ceiling as a mobile, strong-armed starter. The problem: the 2026 actuals are thin. He's logged just 243 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception across two appearances, worth 15 PPR points. Winston, meanwhile, drops off your radar entirely after producing 71 PPR points this season — fine in a pinch, now on the bench.

So treat this one carefully. If you've got a loaded QB room, don't rush to burn a roster spot on a one-game sample right before the Giants' bye. But in deeper leagues or superflex, McCarthy is a must-add on upside alone — our QB4 ranking isn't an accident, and the athleticism plus a tailored game plan is exactly the profile that pops. Stash him, watch the Houston tape, and be ready to start him out of the bye. WATCH for now, lean toward adding before someone in your league beats you to it.
