Giants QB Battle Heats Up: McCarthy vs. Winston After Benching
Harbaugh says the Giants are 'homing in' on a QB call for Houston after Winston got pulled and JJ McCarthy sparked three fourth-quarter drives.

A possible benching and a brutal Texans pass rush make him unstartable.
- Winston benched in 2nd half of 34-27 loss to Saints
- McCarthy led 3 fourth-quarter scoring drives in debut
- Winston: 957 pass yds, 7 TD, 0 INT over 5 starts (2026)
- Giants sit atop NFC East despite QB churn
- Texans' Will Anderson leads NFL with 7.5 sacks
John Harbaugh's first year in New York was supposed to be about Jaxson Dart. Instead, a Week 2 injury flipped the script, and now the Giants have a live quarterback competition on their hands heading into a Week 8 road trip to Houston. After Jameis Winston got pulled at halftime of Sunday's 34-27 loss to the Saints, Harbaugh told reporters Monday that the staff is still working through the decision and homing in on an answer.
Winston had been serviceable as the fill-in, posting a 2-1-1 record across five starts with 957 passing yards, 7 touchdowns and zero interceptions this season (2026). That turnover-free line is the headline, but Sunday's struggles opened the door for rookie JJ McCarthy, who engineered three fourth-quarter scoring drives in his Giants debut. The comeback fell short, yet it did enough to put Harbaugh on the clock.
The Case Each Way
Harbaugh is almost certainly weighing the matchup. Houston started 0-4 but has ripped off two straight wins, and the defense is legit — pass rusher Will Anderson leads the league with 7.5 sacks. McCarthy's mobility could help against that front, but a rookie learning the playbook on the fly against a hot defense is a dicey proposition. Expect both quarterbacks to take practice reps until Harbaugh commits.
The quarterback isn't even the only mess. Cam Skattebo, the Giants' starting running back on paper, somehow logged zero carries against the Saints. Harbaugh said afterward he's waiting for a back to seize the job, which tells you how unsettled this offense is from top to bottom.
The Fantasy Fallout
For fantasy purposes, this is a stay-away situation until Harbaugh names a starter. Winston ranks QB26 in our 2026 rankings (#76 overall) and has run 2 fantasy points below his season average over his last five games — not the trend you want when your job's in question. McCarthy has essentially no track record and a nightmare matchup if he gets the nod.
Bottom line: sit Winston this week regardless of who starts, and don't chase McCarthy on waivers until the Giants hand him the keys for real. Skattebo managers should also pump the brakes — he's our RB33 (#141 overall) with 51 PPR points through six games, and a coach openly shopping for a starting back is a red flag, not a buy signal. Watch the Wednesday practice reports before you make any move.
