Giants Trade for J.J. McCarthy After Jaxson Dart's Season-Ending Knee Surgery

New York lands the former first-rounder to back up Jameis Winston, but Dart's #16-QB upside is on ice until 2027. Here's the real fantasy read.

DROP
J.J. McCarthy

A backup behind Winston with no path until Dart returns. Not rosterable.

Key numbers
  • Dart out for season after knee surgery
  • McCarthy 2025: 6-4, 11 TD, 12 INT, 57.6% comp
  • McCarthy didn't play in 2026, lost job to Murray
  • Winston scored 45 PPR pts over 3 games in 2025
  • Dart ranked #16 at QB before the injury

The Giants just reshaped their quarterback room overnight, trading for J.J. McCarthy from the Vikings after Jaxson Dart went down with a season-ending knee injury that required surgery. Dart — who was our #16 QB (overall #36) on the back of a strong rookie campaign, 2,272 pass yards, 15 touchdowns and nine rushing scores across 14 games in 2025 — is done for the year.

That leaves Jameis Winston atop the depth chart, with McCarthy sliding in as the insurance policy. It's a fascinating low-cost swing for New York, and former Giants QB Russell Wilson, speaking on a CBS Sports show this week, called it an "interesting" move that could turn into a "great" reset for a young passer whose career has been stuck in neutral.

Why The Giants Made The Call

Wilson's logic is simple: McCarthy gets to decompress behind a veteran instead of being thrown to the wolves. He expects Winston — Wilson's teammate on the 2025 Giants — to pass along plenty of advice, and he likes the fit for head coach John Harbaugh, who now has a proven competitor and former high draft pick sitting in reserve.

Pro Bowler Kyle Long added the obvious caveat: the messaging has to be airtight. Winston is the starter now, and when Dart — the guy Long called "the guy with the diamonds" — is healthy, the job reverts back to him. McCarthy is a bridge, not the future in New York. Long framed it bluntly: the Giants need him, and he needs the Giants.

A Career Looking For A Reset

McCarthy's path here has been brutal. His rookie year ended before it started with a knee injury in the preseason. Handed the Vikings' keys in 2025 after Sam Darnold left for Seattle, he lasted until Week 2 before a high-ankle sprain cost him five games, with a concussion and a hand injury piling on more missed time.

The final 2025 line tells the story: 10 games, a 6-4 record, 57.6% completion, 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions — more picks than scores. That's 127 PPR points, good for our #32 QB last season. Then he lost the Minnesota job outright to Kyler Murray and didn't take a snap in 2026. A change of scenery is exactly what his career needed.

The Fantasy Fallout

Let's be clear about the losers first. Dart managers in keeper and dynasty leagues just saw real 2026 value evaporate — his 242 PPR points in 2025 were legit QB1 territory, and now you're stashing him for next year. In redraft, he's a straight drop unless you have deep IR flexibility.

Winston is the only immediately relevant name here, and even that comes with an asterisk. He scored 45 PPR points across three games in 2025 and his last five outings trended 3.5 points below his season average. He's a streaming dart throw in two-QB and superflex formats, nothing more — volatile ceiling, floor you can't trust.

As for McCarthy, don't overthink it. He's our #32 QB and sits behind a healthy starter with no clear path to touches barring a Winston injury. In dynasty, he's a cheap buy-low speculative stash if you believe in the Harbaugh reset narrative — the talent that won a title at Michigan is still 23 and cheap to acquire.

Bottom line: drop McCarthy in all redraft formats and hold Dart only if you can afford the roster spot into 2027. The one live wire is Winston as a desperation superflex streamer. Everyone else can scroll past this one.
