J.J. McCarthy Lands in New York, But Giants' QB Puzzle Is a Mess
The No. 10 pick in 2024 called the Vikings trade 'a shock.' With Jameis Winston starting Week 4, McCarthy's fantasy value is stuck in neutral.

Talented but buried behind Winston while learning a new offense.
- Drafted No. 10 overall by Vikings in 2024
- 127 PPR pts in 10 games last season (2025)
- Our #9 overall, #4 QB this season
- Winston starts Week 4 vs Cardinals
- Giants sit 2-1 entering Sunday's home game
J.J. McCarthy is a New York Giant, and he admits he never saw it coming. The 23-year-old, drafted No. 10 overall by Minnesota in the 2024 NFL Draft, told reporters the trade was a shock — but one he's framing as an opportunity in a Giants quarterback room that just lost its rookie starter for the year.
That rookie, Jaxson Dart, was quietly building a case before his season-ending injury: 250 pass yards, three touchdowns, no picks and 54 rushing yards across two games, good for 27 PPR points and a #36 overall ranking in our model. His exit left a hole, and the Giants filled it by acquiring a former first-rounder who put up 127 PPR points over 10 games last season (2025) in Minnesota.
What Actually Happened in New York
McCarthy's first two years with the Vikings didn't unfold the way anyone drew it up, and he was candid about the business side of the league. He thanked Minnesota for the relationships and the growing pains, then pivoted hard: he's fired up to be a Giant and sees the move as a chance to take advantage of.
The catch is timing. McCarthy was just dropped into a new playbook, and the staff has been easing him in rather than fast-tracking him onto the field. Coach John Harbaugh said McCarthy handled everything asked of him at practice this week and is essentially living in the offense around the clock, trying to learn it all.
For now, that means Jameis Winston keeps the keys. Winston draws the Week 4 start against Arizona, and his numbers tell you why the Giants wanted a backup plan: 229 pass yards, zero touchdowns and an interception over two games (2026) — a modest 9 PPR points. He's a veteran who can start, but he's sputtered offensively in recent weeks.
The QB Pecking Order Is Still Fuzzy
Harbaugh wouldn't commit to anything beyond the obvious. Winston starts, but the backup role is genuinely unsettled between McCarthy and Jake Haener, who's only been in the building about a month himself. The coach admitted the staff is still figuring out how to deploy both of the newcomers.
That uncertainty matters for your roster. McCarthy carries real pedigree — our model has him at #9 overall and the #4 quarterback on talent and projection — but ranking and reality are two different things when a guy is learning the scheme and sitting behind a veteran starter. The ceiling is there; the runway isn't, at least not yet.
The Fantasy Fallout
Winners: Jameis Winston, in the narrowest sense. He has the job this week and is startable only in the deepest two-QB and superflex formats, and even then with your eyes closed. His zero-touchdown profile this season (2026) makes him a desperation play, not a plan.
Losers: anyone who stashed McCarthy expecting an immediate return. He's not a Week 4 asset, and his elite positional ranking is a bet on talent and future opportunity, not Sunday's box score. Jake Haener, who managed just 13 PPR points across eight games in 2024, remains a non-factor for fantasy.
The move: in standard one-QB leagues, there's nothing to do here — leave all three Giants on the wire. In superflex and dynasty formats, McCarthy is a hold worth monitoring closely. If Winston keeps struggling and McCarthy gets the offense down, a mid-season promotion would make his #9 overall tag suddenly very relevant. Watch the practice reports, not the headlines.
