Jahmyr Gibbs Cashes In: Lions Make Him NFL's Highest-Paid Back
Gibbs signs a three-year, $67.5M extension (up to $75.75M) and inherits a bell-cow role after Detroit shipped David Montgomery to Houston.

Detroit locked up its offensive engine. Jahmyr Gibbs and the Lions agreed to a three-year, $67.5 million extension that can climb to $75.75 million, a deal that resets the running back market. At a $22.5 million average annual value, Gibbs is now the highest-paid back in the league per OverTheCap.
There's a wrinkle for the cap watchers: the new money doesn't actually start until after the 2027 season. Gibbs plays 2026 on the last year of his rookie deal and 2027 on his fifth-year option first. For fantasy purposes, none of that matters — what matters is that Detroit just committed franchise-level cash to a 24-year-old who finished as our RB3 in 2025.
The Résumé That Earned It
Gibbs has cleared 1,200 scrimmage yards in every one of his three pro seasons and topped 1,800 in each of the last two. Since arriving as a 2023 first-rounder, he's piled up 856 touches, 5,029 scrimmage yards and 49 touchdowns. He's also durable — 17 games played in each of the past two years, which for a back with his workload is its own flex.
In 2025 alone he ran for 1,223 yards and 13 scores while adding 77 catches for 616 yards and five more touchdowns, good for 367 PPR points. That pass-game usage is the separator. He's not a runner who catches a little; he's a dual-threat who happens to lead the backfield.
Why the Workload Just Got Fatter
The other half of Detroit's "Sonic and Knuckles" backfield is gone — David Montgomery was traded to Houston, where our model has him at RB27 (#99 overall) off a 165-PPR-point 2025. The Lions signed Isiah Pacheco to soak up the bruising early-down work, but he sits at RB54 (#220 overall) after just 87 PPR points across 13 games last season. That's a replacement, not a rival.
Bottom line: Gibbs was already elite while splitting carries, and now the goal-line and early-down volume that went to Montgomery is up for grabs. Pacheco will take a bite, but Gibbs is the clear centerpiece and a locked-in first-round fantasy pick — our #5 overall for 2026. If a nervous manager in your league is spooked by a possible "committee," this is the window to buy him at anything short of full price.
