Jason Sanders Lands on Jets Practice Squad After Preseason Misses
Sanders re-signs to New York's practice squad after missing two kicks in the preseason finale, with the Week 1 kicking job still unsettled.

Jason Sanders isn't off the Jets roster, but he isn't safely on it either. New York re-signed the veteran kicker to its practice squad after he shanked two attempts in the team's preseason finale, and head coach Aaron Glenn made it clear the Week 1 kicking job is still up for grabs. For a position that usually operates on autopilot, that's an unusual amount of uncertainty two weeks from opening kickoff.
Glenn said the staff will keep evaluating who handles the duties in Week 1, which is coachspeak for "the leg battle isn't over." Sanders was our #6 kicker on the board (#125 overall) and put up 137 PPR points across 17 games in 2024 — solid, startable numbers when he's got the job. Right now he doesn't have it locked down.
The practice squad move was part of a larger roster shuffle. The Jets added 15 other players to the unit, and all but one of them spent the offseason in New York. The exception is linebacker Troy Reeder, who worked with the Lions over the summer before joining the group.
The rest of the practice squad reads like a depth-chart appendix: cornerbacks Mory Bamba, Jordan Clark and Sam Womack; receivers Cam Camper, Malik McClain and Jamaal Pritchett; linebackers Paschal Ekeji, Jaden Keller and Nate Lynn; offensive linemen Marquis Hayes and Xavier Newman; defensive linemen Jack Heflin and Payton Page; and running back Al-Jay Henderson. None of them move the fantasy needle today.
The Fantasy Fallout
Here's the thing about kickers on practice squads — they don't score fantasy points from there. Sanders can be elevated or promoted if he wins the job, but the fact that he's not on the 53 while the competition continues tells you the Jets aren't sold. Missing two kicks in your audition game is a tough way to make an impression.
If you drafted Sanders as your Week 1 kicker, you need a backup plan right now. Grab a kicker with a clear starting role and stream from there until New York names its guy. If Sanders wins the job outright, he's a fine streaming option given his 2024 track record — but until Glenn hands him the role, keep him on your watch list, not your active lineup.
