Two second-year quarterbacks, two brand-new coaching setups, two completely opposite Week 1 results. Jaxson Dart carved up the Cowboys to the tune of 23-of-29 passing for 230 yards and three touchdowns in the Giants' season-opening win — a passer rating cleaner than anything he posted as a rookie. Cam Ward, meanwhile, mustered just 140 passing yards and a 10-point team output in a loss to the Jets.
The split isn't lost on Wink Martindale, the former Giants defensive coordinator who never exactly clicked with Brian Daboll. Speaking on "Talkin' Ball with Pat Leonard," Martindale said he wasn't ready to crown Dart as "the guy" just yet, but admitted the kid looked like a completely different quarterback. Then he twisted the knife: so did Ward, he added — and not in a good way.
The subtext is impossible to miss. Daboll called plays for Dart's uneven rookie campaign in New York before landing as the Titans' offensive coordinator this offseason. Dart now works under John Harbaugh and OC Matt Nagy, and Martindale credited the young QB for buying into the system and understanding what the offense wanted from him.
What Changed for Ward
This is the frustrating part for Ward managers. He closed 2025 hot — eight touchdowns to one pick over his final four games, with a passer rating hovering around 104 across the last three. Then Daboll arrived, and Ward's Week 1 looked like his early-rookie struggles all over again: an 80.2 rating against a Jets defense that isn't exactly feared.
In our model, Ward sits as QB22 (#64 overall) after logging 201 PPR points across 17 games in 2025. His last-five-game form last season ran +2.7 fantasy points above his season average, so the raw talent and upward arc are real. One ugly game under a new play-caller isn't a reason to bail — but it's a reason to temper the breakout hype that followed his rookie finish.
The Fantasy Fallout
Dart is the more interesting fantasy asset right now. He's QB16 in our rankings (#36 overall) and posted 242 PPR points in just 14 games last year, fueled by an elite rushing profile — 487 yards and nine scores on the ground. Add the mobility to a Nagy offense he clearly gets, and you've got legitimate streaming-plus upside. Buy low on Dart before the box scores force everyone to notice, and hold Ward through at least one or two more games before deciding whether the Daboll fit is a fantasy problem or just Week 1 rust.
