Lions Defense Is Broken, and Dan Campbell Won't Blow It Up Yet
Detroit ranks dead last in points and yards allowed through Week 4. That's a green light for every Lions skill player on your roster.

Shootout script keeps the Lions passing volume sky-high all year.
- Lions last in NFL in points and yards allowed through Week 4
- Carolina hung 32 on Detroit in a 32-26 loss
- Gibbs: 116 PPR pts in 4 games, our RB3 (2026 actual)
- St. Brown: 31 rec, 303 yds, 5 TD, 91 PPR pts (2026 actual)
- Detroit sits at 2-2 after a 15-2 finish in 2024
The Detroit Lions are dead last in the NFL in both points and yards allowed through four weeks of 2026, and head coach Dan Campbell isn't ready to do anything drastic about it. After Sunday night's 32-26 loss to Carolina, Campbell said he won't entertain a coordinator change and instead wants to exhaust every option with the players and coaches already in the building. That's the second straight year this defense has been a sinkhole.
Bryce Young picked them apart for 329 yards, Tetairoa McMillan torched them for 14 catches, 192 yards and two scores, and Chuba Hubbard added 122 rushing yards and two touchdowns. This isn't a one-off, either. The Panthers, Jets, Bills and Saints have all dropped at least 24 points on Detroit, with New Orleans scoring 30 across the second half and overtime of the opener.
Campbell is standing behind second-year coordinator Kelvin Sheppard, and so are his players — linebacker Jack Campbell publicly backed him this week. There's a case for patience: the secondary lost Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch to injury, and Terrion Arnold left late in the offseason. But the rot started before those absences, back when Aaron Glenn took his top-10 unit to the Jets. Detroit went 15-2 in Glenn's final year and slid to 9-8 once Sheppard took over.
Why This Is a Fantasy Gold Mine
Here's the thing fantasy managers should actually care about: a defense this bad forces Detroit into shootouts, and shootouts mean volume for an elite offense. Jared Goff already logged his seventh career 400-yard game in Week 4. Jahmyr Gibbs is our RB3 with 116 PPR points through four games (2026 actual), and the game scripts only help a back who catches passes and finishes drives. Penei Sewell and Sam LaPorta round out a unit that can trade blows with anyone.
Amon-Ra St. Brown is the clearest beneficiary. He's our WR3 and No. 13 overall, sitting on 31 catches, 303 yards and five touchdowns for 91 PPR points this season (2026 actual). When your defense can't get off the field, your offense keeps throwing — and St. Brown is the target that matters most when Detroit has to chase.
The Verdict
If a nervous St. Brown manager is spooked by Detroit's 2-2 start, pounce. The defensive collapse is bad for Lions football but great for fantasy production on the other side of the ball — every Detroit skill player is a confident weekly start, and Gibbs is a locked-in RB1. Buy any Lions pass-catcher you can pry loose, because the shootout model isn't going anywhere while Campbell stays the course.
