Michael Penix Set to Split First-Team Reps With Tua as ACL Return Nears
Penix is cleared for 11-on-11 work after a midseason ACL tear, and Stefanski won't rule out a Week 1 start over Tua Tagovailoa.

Cleared for 11-on-11, but the Week 1 job is genuinely up for grabs.
- Penix cleared for 11-on-11 after midseason ACL tear
- Penix, Tua splitting first-team reps starting Monday
- Stefanski won't confirm a Week 1 starter
- Starters set to play Friday vs. Dolphins
- Tua ranks #104 overall, #26 QB in our model
Michael Penix is officially back on the field for real. Head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters Monday that Penix and Tua Tagovailoa will split first-team reps in practice, marking the young quarterback's first true 11-on-11 work since tearing his ACL midway through last season. Up to this point he'd been limited to individual drills, walkthrough huddles and 7-on-7 during training camp.
Stefanski framed the milestone as a process — now that Penix is cleared, he can start facing a full offensive and defensive line again. But when asked directly whether Penix could realistically start Week 1, the coach declined to speculate, leaning instead on his everything-is-a-competition line. Read that how you want, but he didn't slam the door on the rookie taking the job.
The other name to know is undrafted rookie Jack Strand, who's turned heads in the preseason. Stefanski praised his development but was clear: Strand is working with the twos and threes and is not a starting option right now. So this is a two-horse race, and the healthier horse is gaining ground fast.
The next checkpoint comes Friday against the Dolphins in the preseason finale. Stefanski plans to play his starters, which gives Penix a live audition — assuming he gets through this week of practice cleanly. Clear that hurdle, and the Week 1 conversation gets very real.
The Fantasy Fallout
Here's the roster math. Tua sits at #104 overall and QB26 in our model, coming off a 2025 season (14 games) that produced 2,660 passing yards, 20 touchdowns against a rough 15 interceptions and 161 PPR points. His form is trending the wrong way, too — down two fantasy points per game over his last five compared to his season average. That's not a profile you protect at all costs.
For fantasy purposes, treat this as a genuine WATCH on Penix and a flashing yellow light on Tua. If Penix looks sharp Friday and grabs the Week 1 nod, Tua's already-thin standalone value craters and Penix becomes a late-round dart with real upside. Don't reach for either yet, but if you're rostering Tua as a streamer, have a backup plan ready — this situation could flip before the season kicks off.
