Panthers Trim to 53: Etienne Hits IR, Ekwonu Lands on PUP

Carolina got down to the 53-man limit, and for fantasy purposes the headline move is running back Trevor Etienne landing on injured reserve with a designation to return. That return tag matters — it means he's not gone for the year — but the profile it protects is thin. Etienne logged just 94 rushing yards and three catches for 13 more across 17 games in 2025, good for 14 PPR points on the whole season. Our model has him at RB91 (#423 overall), which is about where a stash-and-forget back belongs.

The bigger roster story is up front, where the Panthers opened the year without both tackles. Left tackle Ikem Ekwonu goes on reserve/PUP alongside defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton, while right tackle Taylor Moton lands on the reserve/non-football illness list. Carolina also flipped a 2028 sixth-round pick to the Chargers for defensive tackle TeRah Edwards to shore up the interior. None of that scores fantasy points directly — but a shaky offensive line is exactly the kind of thing that caps a young quarterback's ceiling and every skill player around him.

Who Got Cut That You Cared About

Nobody you were rostering in a standard league, honestly. Wideout Casey Washington was waived after a 6-catch, 94-yard, zero-touchdown 2025 (15 PPR points over seven games), sitting at WR159 in our rankings. Tight end James Mitchell (TE99, three grabs for 28 yards in 2025) is out too. Both were bench-of-the-bench names in the deepest dynasty formats and now don't even have a clear roster spot.

Among the 10 vested veterans released, the recognizable names are quarterback Kyle Trask, wide receiver David Moore and safety Isaiah Simmons. Moore managed all of three PPR points across four games last year, so his fantasy relevance was already at zero. Trask never factored into the Panthers' QB picture, and Simmons is an IDP-only consideration if your league even goes that deep.

The Panthers can build their practice squad on Monday, which means some of these waived players — Washington and Mitchell included — could circle back through the back door. Keep that in mind before you burn a dynasty stash on a guy who might just resurface on Carolina's PS anyway.

The Fantasy Move

For redraft managers, there's nothing here to chase. Etienne's IR-return designation is worth a passing note in the deepest of dynasty leagues, but a 14-point rookie season behind a banged-up line isn't a hold you agonize over. Watch how the backfield shakes out once he's eligible to return, and let someone else spend the roster spot in the meantime. Washington and Mitchell are droppable in every format that had them rostered.
