Special-teams only — no defensive snaps means no fantasy value yet.

Key numbers
  • Brown played 86% of kicking-game snaps last 2 weeks
  • Core-four role: both returns and both coverages
  • Pettus on IR, out until after Week 6
  • Patriots have until Oct. 14 to activate Schooler
  • Second open 53-man spot likely goes to Schooler

The Patriots made Mike Brown a permanent fixture, promoting the veteran safety to the 53-man roster before Sunday's Week 5 matchup with the Raiders. The timing matters: Brown had only one standard elevation left from the practice squad, so New England locked him in now while they had roster flexibility and pocketed that elevation for a rainy day.

Don't let the "safety" label fool you, though. Brown has logged 86% of available kicking-game snaps over the last two weeks and did it in a true core-four capacity — kickoff return, punt return, kickoff coverage and punt coverage. This is a special-teams signing dressed up as a defensive one.

Brown lost the No. 3 safety competition to UDFA Dell Pettus back in camp, sitting behind Craig Woodson and Kevin Byard on the depth chart. But with Pettus on IR and ineligible to return until after Week 6, New England leaned on Brown first as an elevation and now as a full-time roster piece.

His most important job? Personal protector in the punt game. The Patriots cycled through Pettus, Woodson and Jaylen Reed in that role over the first two weeks before settling on Brown from Week 3 on. With Brenden Schooler's return also looming, the team has effectively stacked experienced, reliable bodies into its kicking-game operation for the long haul.

The Schooler Domino

There's a second open spot on the 53, and the writing's on the wall for who gets it. Schooler returned to practice after Week 2 despite being on the non-football injury list with a back issue, and he's already a full participant. New England has until Oct. 14 to activate him or lose him for the season — expect them to make the call this week or next.

Other names are eligible to come off their injury lists too — OT Marcus Bryant, ED Harold Landry III, LB Khalil Jacobs and P Bryce Baringer — but Schooler is the only one of that group actually practicing. That makes him the clear favorite for the 53rd spot.

For fantasy managers, this is a nothing-burger in redraft and most dynasty formats. Brown is a special-teams specialist with no defensive role to speak of, so he carries no IDP value and won't sniff a snap that matters for your lineup. File it under roster trivia, keep an eye on Schooler's activation for depth-chart context, and move on. Nothing here changes a single start/sit call.
