Day-to-day with a toe issue, but the imaging bought him time.

Key numbers
  • Dowdle day-to-day with a toe injury for Week 3
  • Further testing checked out relatively OK
  • Sunday line: 7 carries, 22 rush yds, 2 catches, 22 yds
  • Ranked #53 overall (#18 RB) in our model
  • Down 4.1 fantasy pts vs average over his last 5 games

Rico Dowdle picked up a toe injury on Sunday, but the follow-up news is about as good as a toe scare gets. Ian Rapoport reports that additional testing checked out relatively OK, and the Steelers back is listed as day-to-day heading into their Week 3 matchup with the Bengals. No talk of an extended absence, which is the phrase every fantasy manager wants to read.

Dowdle wasn't exactly lighting up the box score when it happened: seven carries for 22 yards and two catches for another 22 through the air. Jaylen Warren and practice squad call-up Travis Homer handled the rest of the Pittsburgh backfield work on the day.

Where This Leaves the Backfield

Warren and Dowdle finished nearly stapled together in our 2025 season rankings — Warren at #52 overall (#17 RB) on 217 PPR points, Dowdle a spot behind at #53 (#18 RB) on 216. That's a functional 1A/1B split, which is precisely why a Dowdle absence matters. If he can't go against Cincinnati, Warren inherits the clear lead role and Homer becomes the emergency body.

Homer, for what it's worth, is the definition of not fantasy-relevant: he logged -2 rushing yards and zero PPR points across 10 games in the 2025 season. Nobody's rushing to the waiver wire for him unless things get truly ugly in Pittsburgh's room.

The one caution flag on Dowdle isn't the toe — it's the trend. He's averaged 4.1 fewer fantasy points than his season baseline over his last five games, so even at full health he's been trending the wrong way. A committee back cooling off is worth monitoring, injury or not.

The Fantasy Fallout

Bottom line: hold Dowdle and track his practice reps this week. The imaging bought him breathing room, so an outright drop would be premature for a top-20 back. If you roster Warren, though, this is your cue to bump him up your flex board — he's the direct beneficiary if Dowdle sits, and he's the safer play right now given Dowdle's recent slide.
