The 2027 linebacker class has depth, talent, and a nagging injury problem — and sitting on top of it all is Clemson's Sammy Brown. Brown started by the end of his true freshman season in 2023 and earned All-ACC honors as a sophomore, and our scouting projects him as a first-round talent who could sneak into the top 10 if the rest of the class weren't so loaded. For dynasty rookie-draft planners peeking ahead, that's the name to circle.
What makes Brown the clear No. 1 is a resume that reads like a made-up character. In high school he rushed for 2,289 yards, averaged 44.5 yards a punt, won a Georgia 1A 400m state title at 50.5 seconds, ran a 10.7 100m, and was a two-time state wrestling champion. On tape he's fast, physical, and the surest tackler in the group. That's a rare, bettable profile.
The Guys Chasing Him
Auburn's Xavier Atkins is the wildcard — a sub-220-pound linebacker who moves like a corner in the box but hits like something meaner. He piled up nine sacks last season as a blitzer, and while the ideal outcome is bulking toward 230, there's little on film that screams he won't translate as a modern weakside linebacker.
Then come the recovery cases. Notre Dame's Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa was in genuine contention for the top spot before a torn ACL last November; his ability to rush off the edge one snap and cover a tight end the next is exactly the hybrid role NFL defenses covet now. Penn State's Tony Rojas — a 4.37 sprinter who ran for 2,239 yards and 35 scores as a Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year — looked like a top-75 pick through four games before his own ACL tear in September practice.
The Oddball Worth Watching
Ole Miss's Suntarine Perkins is the strangest evaluation on the board: a 216-pound edge-setter who, over the past two falls, logged 74 pressures and 15 sacks while flashing an 87.6 coverage grade. This past season his snaps flipped toward coverage (248 to 213), and he showed the speed to run with slot receivers. Getting his NFL role right will take creativity, but the ceiling is real.
For fantasy managers, none of this changes your 2026 lineup — these are 2027 prospects, and defensive players barely move the needle in most formats anyway. If you're in an IDP dynasty league, though, Brown is the name to file away now; the ACL guys (Viliamu-Asa, Rojas) are pure watch-list stashes until they prove the knee holds up. No action today. Just intel for the offseason grind ahead.
