49ers WR Demarcus Robinson Out 3-6 Weeks With High Ankle Sprain

Robinson was carted off against the Dolphins after a 20-yard catch and is now a likely IR candidate. The 49ers' receiver room is thinning fast.

Demarcus Robinson

Three-to-six-week high ankle likely lands him on IR — no bench-holding this in standard leagues.

Key numbers
  • Injured Sunday, Sept. 20 vs. Dolphins
  • High ankle sprain, 3-6 weeks per Shanahan
  • Left with 6:46 in Q2, didn't return
  • Likely 49ers IR candidate
  • Injury came after a 20-yard Purdy connection

Add another name to the San Francisco injury ledger. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Monday that wide receiver Demarcus Robinson suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday's Week 3 win over the Dolphins and will be sidelined for three to six weeks — a timeline that, in Shanahan's own words, makes Robinson a likely injured-reserve candidate.

It happened fast and it looked ugly. Robinson hauled in a 20-yard dart from Brock Purdy with 6:46 left in the second quarter, then lost his footing coming out of the catch. He tweaked the ankle trying to pop back up and keep running, and was carted off shortly after. He never returned.

Shanahan didn't sugarcoat it. He noted that high ankle sprains don't come with a clean timeline — three weeks is the best-case scenario and, in his words, that's rare, with six weeks being far more common. That's why the IR move feels like a formality here.

A Depleted 49ers Receiver Room

This isn't happening in a vacuum. San Francisco is already navigating losses across the skill positions — Ricky Pearsall is out for the season with a knee injury, Christian Kirk landed on IR with a calf issue, and De'Zhaun Stribling has dealt with his own ankle trouble. Losing Robinson for a month-plus stretches Purdy's supporting cast even thinner just as the schedule ramps up.

The quarterback himself has been trending the right way — Purdy posted 179 PPR points in nine games last season (2025), and our form data has him up 3.7 fantasy points over his season average across his last five outings. Fewer healthy targets doesn't help that trajectory, but it does open snaps and route volume for whoever climbs the depth chart next.

The Fantasy Fallout

For fantasy managers, this one's simple. Robinson was already a deep-league flier at best, and a three-to-six-week absence with a likely IR designation means he's droppable in every standard format. If you have an IR slot and roster space to burn in a deep dynasty setup, stash him — otherwise, cut bait and chase the target vacuum. Keep an eye on which San Francisco pass-catcher inherits Robinson's snaps; that's where the actual waiver value lives this week.
