Aaron Donald's Rams Return Looks Imminent — Here's the Fantasy Read

Two months of smoke is starting to look a lot like fire. Aaron Donald — retired since after the 2023 season and a three-time Defensive Player of the Year — visited the Rams' facility on Aug. 5 for what the team formally logged on the NFL transaction wire as a "tryout." That's not a rumor or a leaked TMZ clip. That's paperwork.

The trail started in June, roughly 24 hours after the Rams stunned everyone by trading for Myles Garrett out of Cleveland. Donald was asked to shoot the comeback talk down and did the opposite, admitting on June 2 that he was flirting with the idea and pointing to the Super Bowl being played at SoFi this season. Since then the signals have only gotten louder.

How We Got Here

The timeline reads like a slow reveal. On July 10, cameras caught Donald working out on the Rams' practice field. On July 31, after the team's first fully padded session, Sean McVay said a return was "trending upwards" and made clear no decision would come while the Rams were camped at Loyola Marymount. Then came the Aug. 5 workout — the one that had to be reported to the league.

McVay's reaction to that session did nothing to cool things off. He joked it was the best tryout the team had ever run and that Donald could make the roster, framing it as their way of getting hands-on within the rules. Two days later Donald was spotted training at UCLA — in a Rams helmet, no less.

The Rams' last practice at LMU was slated for Aug. 7, and McVay has repeatedly said any Donald decision waits until the team is back home in Woodland Hills. That makes the window narrow and specific. With the 53-man cutdown deadline on Aug. 30 acting as a soft ceiling, a return somewhere between Aug. 9 and Aug. 16 lines up cleanly — early enough to bank real practice reps or even a preseason cameo before the Week 1 trip to Australia against the 49ers.

The On-Field Impact

Pair a returning Donald with a freshly acquired Myles Garrett and the Rams suddenly own one of the scariest interior-plus-edge combinations in football. Even a 35-year-old, two-years-removed version of Donald commands double teams, and that math frees up everyone around him. The caveat is real, though: Donald is in shape, not football shape, and the only cure for that is snaps he hasn't taken in two years.

The Fantasy Fallout

For IDP leagues, this is the headline. A healthy, motivated Donald is an every-week DT1 the moment he's active — few interior players generate pressures and tackles-for-loss at his rate. But you're buying a projection, not a track record: he has zero 2026 snaps, no confirmed role, and a body that hasn't hit a live pocket since 2023.

The quieter winner is Garrett. Any offense that has to account for Donald inside can't roll full protection to Garrett's edge, which should juice his sack ceiling and, by extension, his IDP floor. If you roster Garrett, this news is pure upside with none of the risk.

The loser? Nobody on the Rams' current interior gets more valuable here. If you were banking on a young Rams DL breaking out on volume, a Donald return caps that snap share and shrinks the opportunity.

Bottom line for managers: don't burn a real roster spot on a player who hasn't officially unretired. If you have a deep IDP bench, a speculative stash between now and Aug. 16 is defensible. Everyone else should keep Donald on the watch list and pounce the instant the transaction wire turns that "tryout" into a signing.
