Alvin Kamara's MCL Sprain Opens the Door for Etienne in New Orleans
Kamara is set to miss at least a month and likely Week 1 with an MCL sprain — and Travis Etienne is the clear beneficiary in the Saints backfield.

Alvin Kamara sprained his MCL in Tuesday's joint practice with the Cowboys and is expected to miss at least a month, per reporting out of New Orleans. With the season opener against the Lions 25 days away, the five-time Pro Bowler is now on track to sit out Week 1 for just the second time in his career, and the Week 2 trip to Baltimore (32 days out) sits at the very front edge of that timeline.
This lands on a player already trending the wrong way. Kamara, 31, posted a career-low 11 games last year (2025), finishing with 471 rushing yards, 33 catches for 186 yards and a single total touchdown — good for just 101 PPR points and our RB45 (No. 193 overall). His 3.6 yards per carry and 4.0 yards per touch were both career worsts. Even before the knee, he was a bit-part fantasy piece.
The Saints saw this coming, sort of. New Orleans handed Travis Etienne Jr. a four-year, $48 million deal in March, and the injury now accelerates a transition that was already underway. Etienne is our RB10 (No. 30 overall) off the back of a 254-PPR-point 2025 in which he logged 1,107 rushing yards and 13 total touchdowns across a full 17-game slate.
The Depth-Chart Domino Effect
Behind Etienne, the Saints will lean on Kendre Miller and Devin Neal, and the team could look at outside help. Neal is the more interesting handcuff of the two: he scored 60 PPR points over 10 games last year (2025) and has been trending up, averaging +4.5 fantasy points over his last five outings versus his season mark. Miller (33 PPR points in 7 games) sits at our RB77 and is more of a deep-league dart throw.
There's a wider injury story in this offense too. No. 8 overall pick Jordyn Tyson is set to miss at least two months with a hamstring issue, so Kellen Moore's group is already patching holes before Week 1. That context only sharpens the touch concentration heading Etienne's way.
The Fantasy Fallout
Buy Etienne with confidence — he was already the lead back, and Kamara's absence removes the only real threat to his early-season passing-down work. If you're in a deeper league, Devin Neal is a worthwhile speculative add given his recent form. As for Kamara himself, drop him in redraft leagues where he was a late-round flier; a month-plus timeline plus a reduced role even when healthy makes him a stash-only body. This is Etienne's backfield now.
