Baker Mayfield's Revenge Game vs. Browns Is a Fantasy Trap Sunday

Baker Mayfield gets his old team on Sunday, and the storylines write themselves. Cleveland took him No. 1 overall in 2018, shipped him to Carolina in July 2022, and has since cycled through 10 different starting quarterbacks — tied with the Raiders and Jets for the most in football. In that same window, Browns passers rank dead last in completion percentage (59%) and own a 79:77 TD-to-INT ratio while the team went 26-43.

Mayfield, meanwhile, is thriving. He put up 3,693 passing yards and 26 touchdowns across 17 games last season (2025), good for 274 PPR points and our QB12 heading into 2026. He landed a long-term extension on the eve of the season, and Tampa Bay opens at home as an 8.5-point favorite with a total sitting at just 41.5. This is his payback game, but he already has the last laugh.

The Ceiling Problem

Here's the catch fantasy managers need to internalize: the Browns have not allowed a 300-yard passer in 46 straight games, the NFL's longest streak since the Colts from 2005 to 2008. Mayfield's Week 1 line — 23-of-28 for 216 yards with three lost fumbles in a 33-27 loss at Cincinnati — is the shape of what to expect. Efficient, accurate, but volume-capped. It was his 11th career game with an 80% completion rate and 200-plus yards, the most in the league since 2018.

So you're starting a quarterback likely to complete a high percentage for modest yardage against a defense built to smother the deep ball. The rushing floor and touchdown equity keep him startable, but don't chase a monster ceiling here. The weather doesn't help either — Tampa's forecast calls for thunderstorms and a 60% chance of rain.

The Cleveland Wasteland

On the other sideline, avoid the Browns' passing game entirely. Deshaun Watson gets the Week 2 start after going 16-of-22 for 205 yards with a touchdown and a pick in a 34-10 loss at Jacksonville, much of it in garbage time down 24-0 at the half. Watson posted just 85 PPR points across seven games in 2024 and sits at QB39 in our rankings. He's 0-6 straight up in his last six starts and could have a short leash with Shedeur Sanders (our QB37) waiting.

The lone fantasy sprout was rookie second-round receiver Denzel Boston, who hauled in a 46-yard touchdown — the first Week 1 receiving score by a Browns rookie since Andre Davis in 2002. That's a deep-league dart throw, not a roster staple. Bottom line: fire up Mayfield as a back-end QB1 given the matchup and game script, but temper expectations against a defense that simply doesn't give up big passing days.
