Practice window open, but no clear path to the starting job yet.

Key numbers
  • Gabriel on IR since Aug. 30 (back injury)
  • Browns have 21 days to activate or shut him down
  • 4 QBs now in the Cleveland room
  • Gabriel: 7 TD, 0 INT over 10 games in 2025
  • Watson ranks #39 at QB in our 2026 model

The Browns flipped the switch on Dillon Gabriel's 21-day practice window this week, giving the rookie quarterback his first real path back after he landed on injured reserve Aug. 30 with a back injury suffered in Cleveland's final preseason game. Defensive tackle Kalia Davis, who hurt his quad in training camp, got the same designation. The clock is now running: Cleveland has three weeks to either activate Gabriel to the 53-man roster or shut him down for the year.

Here's the catch — the quarterback depth chart is already stacked. Gabriel returns to a room that includes Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders and Taylen Green, so simply getting healthy doesn't guarantee him a jersey on game day. In limited rookie run last year, Gabriel posted 937 passing yards, 7 TDs and zero interceptions across 10 games in 2025, chipping in 86 rushing yards for 74 PPR points.

The Depth Chart Logjam

Watson is the complication. He's already logged four games this season, throwing for 855 yards with 6 TDs and no picks while adding 127 rushing yards — good for 69 PPR points in 2026. That production ranks him just #39 among quarterbacks in our model, which tells you all you need to know about how fantasy-relevant this room currently is. Cleveland doesn't lack bodies at the position; it lacks a fantasy-usable one.

The Browns also shuffled the margins, signing receiver James Proche II and defensive tackle Chris Williams to the practice squad while cutting running back Eric Gray, punter Wes Pahl and offensive tackle Xavier Truss. Gray never mattered in fantasy — zero PPR points across four games in 2025 — so his departure changes nothing for your roster.

What It Means For Your Roster

Gabriel carries real long-term intrigue — he ranks #20 overall and #7 at the position in our 2026 model, which reflects upside, not his current situation. But upside and a practice window aren't a start. Until Cleveland names him QB1 and gives him a usable role, he's a stash in deeper dynasty formats and a hard pass in standard redraft leagues. Keep the tab open, don't spend a waiver claim yet, and let the depth chart sort itself out before you move.
