Carson Beck's first NFL preseason line — 15-for-19 for 188 yards against the Panthers in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game — reads like a rookie announcing himself. But the parts Arizona's staff actually cared about didn't show up in the box score: flipping a protection after diagnosing a blitz, hitting the right reads, and not putting the ball in danger. That's the stuff that gets a third-round pick a longer runway.
None of it changes the depth chart, though. Barring something unexpected, Jacoby Brissett will start when the Cardinals open against the Chargers on Sept. 13, backed by a fresh one-year, $15.5 million deal. Gardner Minshew sits behind him as the veteran insurance. Beck, drafted with the first pick of the third round, is a project — just one Arizona clearly likes.
The caveats are real. It was Carolina's backups, in a vanilla defense showing only a handful of coverages across Beck's two-plus quarters. Sources told the reporting that this wasn't a one-off, though — it's a continuation of what the Cardinals have seen from Beck since OTAs, through minicamp and camp. One source described him as smart, mature, an alpha in his own way, with the tools to eventually start in the league.
Beck's college arc explains both the buzz and the third-round slide. An uneven 2024 at Georgia ended with a season-ending elbow injury, but he rebuilt his stock at Miami last year, throwing for 3,813 yards and 30 touchdowns while leading the Hurricanes to the national title game. Some front-office staffers reportedly had a late-first-round grade on him before he tumbled to Arizona at pick 65.

For fantasy purposes, this is a Brissett story with a Beck footnote.
