Chargers Eat 'Humble Pie' in Week 1 Flop, McConkey's Ribs Cloud Week 2
L.A. managed just 268 yards and two turnovers as the week's biggest favorite in a 26-14 home loss. Now Ladd McConkey's rib injury threatens the bounce-back.

Rib injury clouds Week 2; monitor his status before locking him in.
- Chargers managed just 268 total yards in Week 1
- Two turnovers in a 26-14 home loss to Arizona
- L.A. was the week's biggest favorite entering the game
- McConkey: 66 rec, 789 yds, 6 TD in 2025 (16 games)
- McConkey ranks #27 at WR, #79 overall in our model
The Chargers walked into Week 1 as the largest favorites on the board and walked out humbled — 268 total yards, two turnovers, and a 26-14 loss at home to the Cardinals. New offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel didn't dress it up on Thursday, calling the whole thing a case of humble pie and admitting the performance looked nothing like the vision he'd spent months building.
McDaniel went further, describing the offensive showing as flat-out shocking compared to what he'd been seeing in practice. He still says he believes in the group, pointing to how players have responded and risen to the moment this week. That belief is about to be tested, because the Week 2 path just got narrower.
The McConkey Problem
Wide receiver Ladd McConkey is dealing with a rib injury, and his availability against the Raiders is genuinely in doubt. That matters a lot for an offense that just posted its worst-case scenario. McConkey is the engine of this passing game — he put up 66 catches for 789 yards and 6 touchdowns across 16 games in 2025 (181 PPR points), and Justin Herbert leans on him heavily.
The bigger issue for managers is that McConkey's recent form was already sliding before the rib news. Over his last five games he averaged 3.6 fewer fantasy points than his season mark, so this isn't a receiver riding a hot streak into a questionable tag. It's a WR2 (our #27 at the position, #79 overall) with a cooling trend and a body part that doesn't heal on command.
The Fantasy Fallout
If McConkey plays, the ceiling is intact — he's still the clear top target in a Herbert offense that will be desperate to fix Week 1. But ribs are the kind of injury that saps volume and downfield willingness even when a guy suits up, and this L.A. attack just proved it can no-show entirely.
The move is WATCH. Don't drop him, don't panic-trade him, but do not lock him into your Week 2 lineup until you see practice reports and a game-day designation. Have a viable pivot ready — if he's ruled out or looks limited, you want your bench option queued up rather than scrambling at kickoff.
