Chris Olave gave New Orleans a scare during Tuesday's joint practice with the Cowboys, leaving the field early, ducking into the medical tent, and walking off with athletic trainers before the session wrapped. The good news: he came back. The less-good news for anyone who's rostered him before — this is the kind of headline Olave managers have gotten far too used to.
The context matters here. Olave has missed 13 games across his four seasons, and any in-and-out of the medical tent is going to spike the blood pressure of every fantasy manager who drafted him top-30. He's WR6 in our rankings (No. 27 overall), which is a valuation built entirely on his 2025 ceiling, not his availability track record.
That 2025 season was the reason to buy in. Olave played a full 16 games and posted career highs across the board: 100 catches, 1,163 yards and nine touchdowns, good for 270 PPR points. When he's on the field, he's a genuine WR1. The problem has always been keeping him on the field.
The Bigger Picture in New Orleans
The Saints' receiver room is already thinning out. First-rounder Jordyn Tyson is expected to miss roughly two months after tweaking his hamstring in a joint practice with the Jaguars last Thursday. And on Tuesday, New Orleans brought in veterans Chase Claypool and Josh Reynolds for workouts — a clear signal the team is stress-testing its depth chart.
For Olave specifically, that depth churn cuts both ways. If he's healthy, less competition means more targets funneled his way. If he's not, the Saints suddenly have a very shallow group behind him, which is exactly why they're kicking the tires on free agents.
The Fantasy Fallout
Don't overreact to a practice exit that ended with him back on the field — there's no diagnosis, no missed games, nothing but a tent visit. Olave's last five games of 2025 ran +3.9 fantasy points above his season average, so the underlying form is real. Hold him at his draft price, but do it with eyes open: monitor every Saints injury report through the week, and if you're in a redraft league, having a stashable handcuff-type flex isn't the worst insurance for a player with this injury résumé.
