Dolphins Claim Rookie CB Jai'Onte' McMillan Off Waivers From Colts

The Dolphins added a corner to the back of their roster Saturday, claiming undrafted rookie Jai'Onte' McMillan off waivers during their preseason game against the Giants. He'd been on the open market for less than a day — the Colts cut him Friday to make room for tight end JJ Galbreath.

To fit McMillan on the active roster, Miami released veteran cornerback Nick McCloud earlier the same day. It's a straight swap at the position, and it tells you the Dolphins liked something on McMillan's tape enough to burn a claim on a player another team just moved on from.

McMillan signed with Indianapolis as an undrafted free agent out of Minnesota back in June. His NFL résumé is thin so far: 17 defensive snaps and a single special teams rep in the Colts' preseason opener. That's the entire body of work.

The timing gives him a narrow runway. Miami says McMillan will start practicing with the team Monday, which leaves him a few days to learn enough of the scheme to earn snaps in the preseason finale. For a bubble player, that final exhibition is essentially the whole audition.

Realistically, this is a numbers-crunch move at the bottom of the depth chart. Undrafted rookies who get claimed this late in August are fighting for a practice-squad spot as much as anything, and McMillan hasn't shown enough yet to project as a Week 1 contributor for the Dolphins' secondary.

Fantasy managers can file this one under nothing to do. McMillan carries no relevance in standard or IDP formats right now, and there's no track record to buy into. Let him prove he can crack the 53-man roster and carve out defensive snaps before he's worth a second glance — for now, keep the roster spot for someone who's actually going to play.
