Isiah Pacheco's first season in Detroit hit a wall before it really started. Coach Dan Campbell confirmed Monday that Pacheco underwent back surgery to remove a body pressing on a nerve, and per ESPN it's a 12-week recovery with a December target for a return. The 27-year-old had already opened the year on injured reserve after an MCL sprain in training camp, though Campbell said that knee issue was no longer a factor.
That's a brutal turn for a back who signed a one-year deal after Detroit shipped David Montgomery to Houston. Pacheco's résumé is real — two Super Bowl rings, 2,537 rushing yards on 576 carries over four Chiefs seasons — but in fantasy terms he was already a distant afterthought here, sitting at RB54 and #220 overall in our 2026 rankings.
What It Means For the Backfield
With Pacheco shelved for the bulk of the season, the Lions have an obvious answer, and his name is Jahmyr Gibbs. Detroit was going to feed him regardless — he finished as our RB3 with 367 PPR points last season (2025) — and Week 1 was a statement: 156 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries in an overtime win over the Saints. Twenty-nine carries. That's not a committee, that's a workhorse.
Behind Gibbs, Campbell name-checked former fourth-rounder Sione Vaki and Jacob Saylors as the guys who need to step up. Both are essentially blank slates. Vaki logged just four rushing yards last season (2025) and remains unranked in our model; Saylors carried it twice for 11 yards in his rookie year. Campbell liked a few of Vaki's reps in the opener but admitted his blocking needs cleaning up.
The fantasy read is simple. Gibbs was already elite and now inherits every meaningful touch that isn't going to a backup nobody can trust yet — hold him with confidence and expect ceiling weeks. Pacheco should be dropped in all but the deepest dynasty leagues until December gives us a reason to reconsider. Vaki is a speculative stash only if you're desperate for handcuff upside and can afford to wait on a player who did nothing last year.
Bottom line: this is a Gibbs story now. If you own him, you're thrilled. If you own Pacheco, cut bait and move on.
