Jameis Winston Benched as Giants Turn to McCarthy After Dart Injury
Winston says he accepts his backup role after a 14-of-26, two-pick outing — and he's QB79 in our rankings for a reason.

Backup behind McCarthy with no clear path to volume — streamers can move on.
- Winston: 14-of-26, 152 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT on Sunday
- QB79 overall, QB26 at position in our rankings
- 71 PPR pts across 5 games this season (2026)
- Dart out for year: torn MCL and meniscus, Week 2
- McCarthy: 11-of-21, 243 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT in relief
The Giants have a new man under center, and it isn't Jameis Winston. After a messy 14-of-26, 152-yard afternoon with a touchdown and two interceptions — an outing that left New York trailing 34-10 in the fourth quarter — Winston has ceded the starting job to Jake McCarthy, who nearly dragged the team back into it going 11-of-21 for 243 yards and a score in relief.
Winston didn't fight the demotion. He said every quarterback is judged by the last time he took the field, and by that measure his job this past Sunday was to lead the Giants to a win. It didn't happen, and he's clear-eyed about what that means: he understands where he stands right now.
This whole mess traces back to Week 2, when rookie Jaxson Dart tore the MCL and meniscus in his left knee and was lost for the season. Winston stepped in as the bridge, but the bridge wobbled, and now McCarthy gets the keys for the foreseeable future.
What Winston Brings — And Doesn't
To his credit, Winston isn't a stranger to this. He's spent most of the last seven seasons as a backup and says he's focused on one day at a time, grateful to still be playing and intent on being the best he can be in whatever role the team hands him. That's the right attitude for a locker room. It's not the attitude of a fantasy asset.
The numbers back the benching. Winston sits at QB79 overall (QB26 at the position) in our rankings, and he's produced just 71 PPR points across five games this season (2026) — seven touchdowns and zero picks on paper, but Sunday's two-INT clunker and a form line running two fantasy points below his season average sealed it. Volume is everything for a streaming QB, and he no longer has it.
The Fantasy Verdict
Drop him. If you grabbed Winston off waivers as a bye-week band-aid, that experiment is over — a clipboard backup behind McCarthy has no fantasy ceiling until injury or collapse changes the picture. Keep McCarthy on your deep-league watch list instead; he's the one with a pulse and the snaps now. Winston's a name worth remembering only if the situation flips again.
