Joe Burrow is officially questionable for Sunday's road game against the Texans, but the arrow is pointing up. After back tightness limited him in Wednesday and Thursday practices, Burrow returned as a full participant Friday, threw more than a dozen passes and, by all accounts, showed no discomfort during the open portion of the session.
The injury dates back to Cincinnati's Week 1 win over Tampa Bay, when Burrow absorbed a couple of big shots — including a collision with Alex Anzalone on a third-and-6 scramble that netted a six-yard gain. Back issues are unpredictable, which is exactly why the Bengals slapped a questionable tag on him rather than clear him outright. It's cover-your-bases stuff, not a red flag.
Head coach Zac Taylor didn't tip his hand on the final call, and he acknowledged the team might elevate Josh Johnson from the practice squad as an emergency third arm — a hint they want to see how Burrow's back responds over the next 48 hours. Taylor also made clear he won't ask his franchise QB to play scared, saying Burrow has to go play football and that stripping the competitor out of him defeats the purpose.
Burrow, for his part, is not entertaining the idea of sitting. Asked Wednesday whether he'd consider resting as a precaution, he kept it blunt: unless he's getting surgery, he'll be out there. That's about as strong a signal as you'll get 48 hours before kickoff.
The Fantasy Fallout
If Burrow suits up, he's a start. He sits at QB31 in our rankings (#130 overall) and posted 135 PPR points across just eight games in 2025, with his last five outings running +3.1 fantasy points above his season average — the form was trending the right way before this scare. A road matchup in Houston isn't a smash spot, but Burrow's ceiling doesn't disappear over some back tightness.
The contingency is Joe Flacco, who'd take over if Burrow can't go. Flacco scored 149 PPR points in 13 games last season (2025) but has been fading — down 7.2 fantasy points versus his own average over his last five. He's a desperation streamer at best, and Josh Johnson (24 PPR points across five 2025 games, QB50 in our ranks) is roster filler only.
Bottom line: keep Burrow in your lineups and monitor Sunday's inactives before the 1 p.m. ET kickoff. If you own him and have zero backup, grab a cheap streamer as insurance — but don't panic-drop anyone. Every signal from Friday says he plays.
