Mahomes Still Not Cleared for Week 1: Why Fields Could Start vs. Broncos
Mahomes has practiced all camp but still needs game clearance nine months after tearing his ACL and LCL. With 18 days to kickoff, it's genuinely open.

He's practiced all camp, but game clearance still hasn't come.
- Tore ACL + LCL on Dec. 14, surgery next day
- Opener is ~9 months to the day post-injury
- Won't play Friday preseason vs. Seahawks
- Mahomes: 304 PPR pts in 2025 (14 games)
- Fields ranks #30 at QB in our model
Patrick Mahomes has taken every practice rep of Chiefs training camp, but as of Aug. 28 he still hasn't gotten the one thing that actually matters for Week 1: medical clearance to play in a game. Kansas City's opener against the Broncos lands on Monday night, and Andy Reid isn't committing to his two-time MVP as the starter. The coach said he's taking it day by day and making no predictions — the doctors, the trainers, and Mahomes himself all have to sign off first.
The context is remarkable. Mahomes tore both his ACL and LCL on Dec. 14, had surgery the next day, and was told a nine-month timeline. The opener falls almost exactly nine months later. He's cleared to throw, cleared to practice, and by his own account feels good making reactionary cuts. What he hasn't done is take a hit — the gap between practice clearance and game clearance — and for the first time in his 10-year career, he won't take a single preseason snap after sitting out Friday's finale against Seattle.
If Mahomes isn't a go, Justin Fields steps in. That's a meaningful downgrade but not a total blackout. Fields posted 135 PPR points across nine games in 2025, throwing for 1,259 yards with 7 TDs and just 1 INT while adding 383 rushing yards and 4 scores on the ground. That rushing floor is exactly why he's still QB-relevant in a pinch — our model has him at #30 at the position (#129 overall).
The Short-Week Wrinkle
There's a scheduling twist working both ways here. A Monday opener buys Mahomes an extra day of recovery, which helps a fresh knee. But it also drops Kansas City onto a short week before a Week 2 trip to face the Colts. If the medical staff is protecting a repaired ligament, playing two games in six days is the kind of thing that could keep him on ice a bit longer.
For perspective on the recovery speed: Micah Parsons tore his ACL the same day, and the Packers star isn't targeting a return until Week 6 at the earliest. Mahomes' injury was arguably worse — ACL and LCL versus Parsons' ACL alone — yet he's on track to beat that timeline by roughly six weeks. Different positions, different rehab, but the pace is genuinely impressive.
The Fantasy Fallout
Fantasy managers: don't panic-drop Mahomes, but don't assume he's locked in either. He put up 304 PPR points over 14 games in 2025, and his last-five-game form sat 6.3 fantasy points below his season average even before the injury. If you rostered him as a QB1, secure a bridge starter — Fields is a viable one-week streamer given his rushing usage — and keep an eye on Kansas City's Friday and weekend injury designations. This is a WATCH, not a SELL. If clearance comes, plug Mahomes right back in; if it doesn't, Fields' legs make him a low-end fill-in against Denver.
