Mike Evans' Quad Sidelines Him in 49ers Camp, But Shanahan Isn't Worried

Evans sat out San Francisco's Aug. 8 practice with a strained quad. Coming off an 8-game, 85-PPR-point season, his fantasy value hinges on staying upright.

Quad is minor, but the 33-year-old's durability is the real question mark.

Key numbers
  • Sat out 49ers practice Aug. 8 with strained left quad
  • Missed 9 games in 2025 (hamstring, broken clavicle)
  • 3-year deal worth up to $60.4M signed this offseason
  • 85 PPR pts in 8 games last season (2025)
  • Our No. 224 overall, No. 74 WR entering 2026

Mike Evans didn't practice for the 49ers on Aug. 8, and before anyone panics: it's precautionary. The 33-year-old is nursing a strained left quad entering his 13th NFL season, and head coach Kyle Shanahan made clear San Francisco is playing it careful with the veteran it just handed a three-year deal worth up to $60.4 million.

Shanahan told reporters after practice that Evans will be good to go and slots in as a starting receiver — but he leaned on one big caveat: health. That's not paranoia. Evans missed nine games last season in Tampa with a hamstring strain and a broken clavicle, finishing with just 30 catches, 368 yards and three touchdowns across eight games — good for 85 PPR points in 2025.

The Streak and the Warning

Here's the context that matters. Evans hit 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first 11 seasons, tying Jerry Rice for the longest such streak in league history — a fittingly 49ers-flavored record. That run finally snapped last year, and it snapped because of injuries, not decline. Shanahan basically said the quiet part out loud: starting receivers play a ton of snaps, and when Evans gets hurt, he misses games.

Shanahan added that Evans probably thinks he could be back on the field right now, which tracks for a player this competitive. The 49ers just aren't going to let him. With the first preseason game against the Chargers on Aug. 20 and the regular-season opener against the Rams in Melbourne on Sept. 10, there's no reason to rush a soft-tissue issue in early August.

The Fantasy Fallout

San Francisco signed Evans to fix a thin receiver room, and on talent he's a legitimate WR1 target. But our model is skeptical, ranking him just No. 224 overall (No. 74 at the position) heading into 2026 — and that number is baking in the age and the durability. Two significant injuries in one season at 33 isn't a footnote.

The verdict is watch, not draft-and-forget. This specific quad injury doesn't scare us — it's minor and the timeline is generous. What should temper your draft-day enthusiasm is the broader pattern. In redraft leagues, let someone else pay the name-brand tax; Evans is a late-round dart throw with upside, not a lock. Monitor his preseason snaps, and if he's cleared and moving well by the LA opener, he's a fine bench stash with WR2 ceiling in a shaky offense.
