Panthers Lose Rookie WR Chris Brazzell for the Year to Knee Surgery

Carolina's rookie receiver depth just took a real hit. The Panthers placed third-round pick Chris Brazzell on injured reserve after he suffered a knee injury at Wednesday's practice, and the team confirmed he'll undergo surgery to repair a torn lateral collateral ligament. That's it for his rookie season before it ever began.

Brazzell arrived with legitimate buzz. A first-team All-SEC pick out of Tennessee last year, he was expected to carve out a role in his first NFL season. Instead, he'll spend the entire year rehabbing with an eye on 2027. For a rookie who needed reps to earn a rotation spot, losing the whole calendar is about the worst-case start.

To fill the open roster spot, Carolina signed tight end Chamon Metayer. He originally caught on with the Steelers as an undrafted rookie back in April before Pittsburgh cut him in June. It's a depth move, not a headline one — Metayer isn't stepping into Brazzell's receiver role, he's just adding a body at a different position.

The Fantasy Fallout

There's no sugarcoating this for anyone who drafted or stashed Brazzell as a deep-league dart throw: the value is gone until 2027. LCL surgery plus a full IR stint means zero snaps, zero targets, zero production this season. In dynasty, he's a hold if you've got the bench room to wait — the pre-injury profile that made him a third-rounder hasn't changed, and rookie ligament repairs generally carry a clean long-term outlook.

In redraft and any format where roster space is precious, cut bait. Brazzell can't help you in 2026, and clogging a spot with a player who won't touch the field is dead weight. Dynasty managers with taxi or IR slots can tuck him away and revisit next summer; everyone else should drop him and move on to receivers who'll actually run routes this fall.
