Tua's Tight Back Stalls Falcons QB Race as Penix Stays Out of Team Drills

Tagovailoa is expected back next week, but Penix — coming off his third ACL tear — still isn't cleared for 11-on-11 work. Atlanta signed Cooper Rush as a camp arm.

Back issue is minor and Penix isn't practicing — Tua's the QB1 favorite.

Key numbers
  • Tua expected back next week, back not considered serious
  • Penix not cleared for 11-on-11 team drills yet
  • Penix eyeing ~4 more weeks — could miss preseason
  • Tua: 20 TD, 15 INT, 161 PPR pts in 14 games (2025)
  • Falcons signed Cooper Rush as camp arm Wednesday

The Falcons' quarterback competition was supposed to be must-watch TV in training camp. Instead it's hit a snag before it could really start. Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed Wednesday that Tua Tagovailoa is sidelined with a tight back, though per ESPN the issue isn't considered serious and Tagovailoa should be back on the field next week.

That's a short pause, not a setback — and the timing barely matters given who's supposed to be pushing him. Michael Penix Jr. still hasn't been cleared for full team activities as he rehabs the torn ACL he suffered in Week 11 last season against Carolina. In 2025 Penix went 3-6 as the starter across nine games, completing 60.1% of his throws for 1,982 yards, nine touchdowns and three picks — good for 122 PPR points and our No. 34 quarterback last year.

Stefanski said Penix has looked great in rehab but won't touch 11-on-11 drills until the medical team signs off, and they're not there yet. Penix himself sounded cautiously optimistic, saying he feels like he can do everything but has to stay smart. He noted this is his third ACL tear — the first in his left knee — and that recovery is deliberately slow-and-steady. He mentioned he was told roughly four more weeks, possibly sooner, before advancing to the next stage.

Do the math and it's ominous for Penix's odds of winning the job. If clearance is another month out, he likely misses the entire preseason. Hard to unseat a healthy incumbent from the bench.

The Quarterback Shuffle

With Tua down and Penix limited, Atlanta was left with undrafted rookie Jack Strand as its only healthy arm — so they signed veteran Cooper Rush on Wednesday. Rush, 32, said he was mid-workout in Dallas on Tuesday when his agent called and told him to catch a flight. He's got eight NFL seasons and 42 games (16 starts) behind him, but last year with Baltimore he threw for just 303 yards and four interceptions in four appearances. Treat him strictly as a camp body, not a fantasy factor.

Here's the fantasy read: this back issue is noise, not signal. Tagovailoa was already commanding the reps this offseason, and with Penix stuck on the sideline, Tua remains the clear favorite for QB1. He put up 20 touchdowns and 161 PPR points across 14 games in 2025, landing as our No. 26 quarterback, and his last five games ran just two points below his season average. He's a WATCH in redraft leagues — a low-end QB2 worth monitoring once camp reps confirm the job is his. Penix is a deeper-league stash only; his 2026 relevance now hinges entirely on that ACL timeline, and every week he's off the grass is a week his ceiling drops.
