Von Miller Joins Cowboys on One-Year Deal to Patch a Broken Pass Rush

The Cowboys keep bolting pieces onto a defense that fell apart last year, and the latest is a big one: eight-time Pro Bowler Von Miller is expected to sign a one-year deal in Dallas, per ESPN. It ends a free-agent limbo that started when his one-year contract with the Commanders ran out, and it hands the Cowboys one of the top edge rushers still on the board.

The production case is real. Miller piled up nine sacks in 2025 despite starting just three of 17 games — his best single-season total since 2018. Dallas needs exactly that, having finished 26th in sack rate and surrendered a league-high 4,521 passing yards a year ago. Add a future Hall of Famer to that mess and the arrow points up, even at this stage of his career.

The context matters too. Miller spent his first decade-plus in Denver, and once this contract is official he'll have suited up for five franchises in six years. He's come off the bench almost entirely across the last three seasons. This is a role signing, not a savior signing.

Where He Fits

Think Jadeveon Clowney's 2025 blueprint. Clowney was a one-year rotational edge in Dallas last season who played real snaps without always being in the starting 11. With him gone and no full-time spot open — Rashan Gary is locked into one outside linebacker job and second-year man Donovan Ezeiruaku is emerging as a situational starter — Miller slots in as the veteran spark in a heavy rotation.

This is all downstream of last summer's Micah Parsons trade to Green Bay. Jerry Jones has been rebuilding the edge group he blew up ever since: Ezeiruaku is a promising sophomore, first-rounder Malachi Lawrence brings upside, and third-round pick Jaishawn Barham could kick to the edge. Miller and Gary keep the whole thing afloat while the youth develops.

The Fantasy Fallout

For IDP managers, temper the excitement. Miller's snap share is the giveaway — a rotational role at this age doesn't generate the consistent tackle-and-sack floor you want from a weekly starter. He could deliver a handful of multi-sack spikes on a defense that gets to pass-rush against second-half deficits, but that's a boom-bust profile. WATCH him in deep IDP formats and only roster him where edge sacks are premium-scored; leave him alone in shallow leagues until we see how the snap rotation actually shakes out in September.
