Za'Darius Smith is heading back to where he last made sense on a fantasy roster. Mary Kay Cabot reports the Browns are expected to bring the veteran edge rusher back, potentially as soon as Sunday, after he worked out for the team earlier this week. Smith piled up 10.5 sacks in 25 games for Cleveland across 2023 and 2024 before a trade to the Lions.
The path here is a winding one. Smith signed with the Eagles last September, then announced his retirement in October before Philadelphia released him from their reserve/retired list earlier this year. Now he's un-retiring at age 33, rejoining a franchise where he already knows the building and owns a productive résumé — 70.5 career sacks with stops in Baltimore, Green Bay, Minnesota and Detroit along the way.
For Cleveland, this is a low-risk shot at rotational pass-rush juice. Smith's best Browns stretch produced double-digit sacks over two years, and a defense can always use a veteran who's proven he can get to the quarterback. The question is how much of that burst is left after a year effectively away from football.
