Austin Ekeler Returns to Commanders, Muddying an Already Crowded Backfield
Washington is bringing back the 31-year-old RB pending a physical, one year after he ruptured his Achilles in Week 2 of 2025.
Ekeler adds noise but White still owns the passing-down role for now.

The Commanders are running it back with Austin Ekeler. Washington is expected to sign the 31-year-old to its active roster pending a physical, per NFL Network, a reunion with a back who spent the last two seasons in D.C. after signing as a free agent in 2024.
The move comes with an obvious asterisk: Ekeler played just two games in 2025 before rupturing his Achilles in Week 2. He's reportedly recovered, and after a workout with the Panthers last week went nowhere, he's headed back to a familiar building. That's the news. The fantasy question is what it does to a backfield that was already getting crowded.
The Backfield Math
Jacory Croskey-Merritt is the guy driving the bus right now. He leads Washington with 47 carries and 142 rushing yards through three games, and his profile backs it up — he posted 805 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns in 2025 (17 games) for 140 PPR points, and his last five games are trending +2.3 fantasy points above his season average. He's our RB32 (#118 overall) and the clear early-down back to own here.
Rachaad White is the one to watch with Ekeler incoming. White has handled the third-down and receiving work — 100 rushing yards on 22 carries plus nine catches on nine targets for 51 yards and a score — and that's precisely the role Ekeler is best known for. White did leave Sunday's win over Seattle with a shoulder issue but returned, and ESPN reports the Ekeler signing isn't connected to that injury. Still, White's arrow was already pointing down: he's our RB30 (#116) and his last five games sit -2.8 fantasy points below his season average after a 143 PPR-point 2025 (17 games).
Don't overrate the Ekeler ceiling, either. Over his 14 games in Washington across two seasons, he managed just 410 rushing yards and four scores with 40 catches for 404 yards. This isn't the guy who averaged nearly 1,600 scrimmage yards and 19 total touchdowns for the Chargers in 2021-22. He's a depth add coming off a major injury, not a bell cow.
Fantasy verdict: Croskey-Merritt remains the priority in this backfield and nothing here changes that. Hold White through the shoulder scare — he still owns the passing-down snaps until Ekeler proves he can take them, which won't be immediate off an Achilles tear. Leave Ekeler on waivers in all but the deepest leagues and revisit only if White's shoulder lingers or Ekeler carves out real targets.
