Baker Mayfield Practices in Full, but a Glove and a Thumb Hold the Key
Mayfield was a full participant Wednesday wearing a glove on his throwing hand, with Todd Bowles waiting until Friday to call his Week 7 status.

Full practice is great, but Friday's call decides everything.
- Mayfield full participant Wednesday in throwing-hand glove
- QB16 timeline: 3-6 weeks after Week 3 thumb injury
- Daniels: 501 pass yds, 3:0 TD-INT, 1-2 as starter
- Bucs 1-5, blew 13-pt 4th-quarter lead last week
- Egbuka entered concussion protocol after practice
Baker Mayfield was back on the field as a full participant in Wednesday's practice, the first real sign that the Buccaneers quarterback could beat the gloomier timeline on his thumb injury. He threw the whole session with a glove on his right hand, and head coach Todd Bowles said Mayfield reported it felt fine after having used it once before. Tampa Bay sits at 1-5 and badly needs him.
The injury has always come down to grip. Mayfield hurt the thumb on the follow-through of an interception against Minnesota, and while the best-case read was a three-week absence, an Oct. 4 report floated a window as long as six weeks. Bowles isn't committing to anything yet — he said he'll see what Mayfield looks like Friday and make the Week 7 call then. Both Mayfield and backup Jalon Daniels are repping the game plan this week.
For context on why Tampa wants him back, Mayfield ranks as our QB12 (No. 26 overall) heading into this season. Through three games in 2026 he's posted 615 passing yards, two touchdowns against two picks, plus 65 rushing yards and a score — 39 PPR points on the year so far. That's a down sample dragged by the injury, but the ceiling that made him a startable QB1 is still there if the thumb cooperates.
The Daniels Factor
If Mayfield can't go, the undrafted rookie keeps the keys. Daniels has started the show capably — 61.2% completions, 501 passing yards, 126 on the ground, and a clean 3:0 touchdown-to-interception split that the source's broader 3:5 team figure doesn't flatter him on. He's gone 1-2 as a starter, including a messy overtime loss where Tampa coughed up a 13-point fourth-quarter lead to Pittsburgh. He's unranked in our system and is averaging 2.7 fantasy points below his season mark over his last five outings — streamer territory at best.
Egbuka in Protocol
The quieter blow from Wednesday: receiver Emeka Egbuka left practice in concussion protocol. He's our WR27 (No. 78 overall) and has quietly been Tampa's most reliable fantasy weapon, with 28 catches for 240 yards and two scores plus a rushing TD across six games — 71 PPR points, the best mark on this list. A concussion this early in the week clouds his Sunday availability regardless of who's under center.
Bottom line for managers: don't bench Mayfield in deeper leagues until Friday's practice report lands, but have a contingency ready given the glove and the thumb are still question marks. Daniels is a last-resort bye-week streamer only, and only if Mayfield is ruled out. Egbuka is the real monitor here — if he clears protocol he's a flex you want, but treat him as questionable until he's practicing without limitations.
