Carson Beck couldn't have scripted a cleaner NFL introduction. In Thursday's Hall of Fame Game, the rookie went 15-of-19 for 188 yards, a touchdown and zero turnovers — the kind of tidy, mistake-free line that gets a fanbase daydreaming in August. He looked composed, got the ball out fast, and didn't force anything. If you drew up a debut for a Day 2 rookie, this is roughly it.
Here's the cold water: Beck is currently third on Arizona's depth chart, sitting behind Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew. Brissett is coming off a genuinely useful 2025 — 3,366 passing yards, 23 touchdowns and 8 picks across 14 games, good for 233 PPR points, which landed him as our QB17 last season. There's no clear runway to the starting job here, and one preseason game doesn't change the pecking order.
Beck's whole profile is about efficiency, not fireworks. At Georgia his 38.6% first-down rate ranked in the 95th percentile among draft-eligible quarterbacks since 2015, and he released the ball quicker than anyone in this rookie class. That's exactly why Mike LaFleur's quick-processing offense in Arizona fits — the scheme wants distribution and rhythm, not a gunslinger. His big-time-throw rate in college hovered around 3%, so don't expect a highlight machine.
History Says Pump The Brakes
The graveyard of preseason risers is deep. Dorian Thompson-Robinson torched the 2023 Hall of Fame Game and looked like a late-round steal — he started five games in two Browns seasons and now plays in the UFL. Justin Fields lit up his debut and fueled a starter controversy; Kenny Pickett capped his with a game-winning drive. Encouraging August tape is worth filing away, but it's rarely predictive.
There's a flip side worth remembering too. Dak Prescott looked comfortable and threw two touchdowns in his debut, and a decade later he's still the guy in Dallas. The point isn't that Beck is doomed — it's that one exhibition game, no matter how clean, tells you almost nothing about Week 6.
For fantasy purposes, treat Beck as a name to monitor, not a player to roster. Brissett is the starter and the only Arizona QB with real streaming appeal right now. Don't spend a draft pick on Beck in redraft leagues; if you're in a deep dynasty format, he's a reasonable stash given the scheme fit and the fact that veteran bridge quarterbacks rarely block a talented rookie for long. Until he moves up the depth chart, though, this is a wait-and-see. File it away and check back if the QB2 label starts to slip.
