CJ Stroud's Year 1 Magic Is Gone — Can Tank Dell Bring It Back?
Stroud averaged 273.9 passing yards as a rookie but just 218.3 the past two years with 20 picks. Houston rebuilt the line and got Dell back to fix it.

The Houston Texans have won a playoff game in each of DeMeco Ryans and CJ Stroud's first three seasons together — a feat only John Harbaugh and Joe Flacco had pulled off before them. And yet Houston remains the lone active franchise that has never played in a conference title game, joining exclusive and unwanted company as one of just three teams ever to string together three straight Wild Card wins followed by Divisional Round losses.
The reason that ceiling exists has a name, and it's the quarterback. Stroud led the NFL with 273.9 passing yards per game as a rookie while posting the league's best TD-to-INT ratio. The two seasons since? Just 218.3 yards per game and 20 interceptions after throwing only five as a rookie. He's the only quarterback in history to drop at least 50 yards per game from Year 1 to Years 2-3 with a minimum of 40 starts.
The playoffs made it worse. Stroud set an NFL postseason record with five fumbles in the Wild Card win over Pittsburgh, then threw four picks in a 28-16 Divisional Round loss at New England. Fair or not, the big-game whispers have started.
What Houston Changed
The front office didn't sit still. Despite Stroud being sacked just 23 times, they remade the offensive line with free agents Braden Smith and Wyatt Teller plus first-round guard Keylan Rutledge at No. 26. They also added David Montgomery — who ran for 716 yards and 8 TDs on 165 PPR points last season (2025, actual) — to pair with second-year back Woody Marks, addressing a run game that ranked 22nd at 108.0 yards per game.
The bigger swing is Tank Dell's return. The 2023 third-rounder missed all of last season after multiple torn ligaments and a dislocated kneecap in Week 16 of 2024, but he's got 1,376 yards and 10 scores in 25 career games. That's a real upgrade behind Nico Collins, given the WR2 spot last year belonged to rookie Jayden Higgins — 41 catches, 525 yards, 6 TDs and 130 PPR points in 2025 (actual). Dalton Schultz remains the safety valve at TE with 82 catches for 777 yards last season.
The defense is the floor that keeps everything afloat. Houston led the NFL in total defense (277.2 YPG) and ranked second in scoring (17.4 PPG), with Will Anderson Jr. — fresh off a three-year, $150 million extension — and Danielle Hunter combining for 50 sacks since 2024, the most of any duo. That unit alone justifies the 9.5-win total that's drawing nearly 90% of the Over money.
For fantasy purposes, Stroud is the definition of a wait-and-see quarterback. His 2026 props sit at 3,599.5 passing yards and 22.5 TDs — numbers he didn't sniff last year, even accounting for three missed games. Better protection, a real WR2 in Dell, and Montgomery in the backfield give him a genuine path back toward that 2023 ceiling. But two straight down years plus a turnover-soaked postseason mean you draft him as a mid-tier QB2 with upside, not a set-and-forget starter. Prove it, then we buy.
