Deebo Samuel Returns to San Francisco as 49ers WR Room Falls Apart

Deebo Samuel is heading home. The 30-year-old wideout agreed to a one-year, $7 million deal with the 49ers, the team that drafted him in the second round back in 2019 and got six seasons out of him before he spent 2025 in Washington. The timing isn't a coincidence — San Francisco's receiver room is suddenly held together with tape.
Ricky Pearsall, the 2024 first-rounder, is dealing with knee swelling tied to last year's PCL injury and has played just 20 of a possible 32 regular-season games since arriving. Christian Kirk, brought in this offseason to add depth, strained his calf on the opening day of training camp. That's how you go from a crowded depth chart to needing reinforcements overnight.
Samuel's résumé still carries weight. His 2021 peak — 1,405 receiving yards, 365 rushing yards and 14 total touchdowns — earned All-Pro honors and helped power two NFC Championship runs. His Washington year wasn't that, but 72 catches for 727 yards and five scores led the Commanders in all three categories and proved he can still be a functional NFL receiver as a yards-after-catch weapon.
Where He Fits
Per reporting out of the Bay Area, Samuel is expected to take over the 'Z' spot — the alignment where he thrived under Kyle Shanahan the first time around. Don't expect the monster touch volume of his prime, but Shanahan has never been shy about lining Deebo up in the backfield, and that gimmick usage is exactly what makes him more than a standard slot body. With Mike Evans (our rank #73 at the position) and rookie De'Zhaun Stribling as the current top options, and Demarcus Robinson (#97 WR) next in line, there's real snaps available.
The Fantasy Angle
For context on how thin this room is: Pearsall posted 89 PPR points in nine games last season (2025), Evans managed 85 in eight games, Kirk just 58 across 13, and Robinson 56 in 14. Nobody here is a lock. Samuel walks into a passing game desperate for a reliable target and reunites with a coach who knows how to scheme him touches.
Fantasy managers should keep Samuel on the WATCH list heading into drafts. If Pearsall's knee lingers into September and Kirk's calf keeps him limited, Deebo's role expands fast and his ADP will be a bargain. Draft him as a late-round upside dart with a clear path to WR3 value in PPR — and pounce harder the moment either injury news turns sour.
