Egbuka's Toe Sprain Clouds Bucs' Week 1 — and Mayfield's Fantasy Value
Todd Bowles calls Emeka Egbuka 'day-to-day, week-to-week' with a toe sprain 26 days out from the Bengals opener. Turf toe fears loom.

Toe sprain severity unclear; don't reach until Bowles clarifies.
- Egbuka: 63 rec, 938 yds, 6 TD in 2025 (194 PPR pts)
- Bowles labels Egbuka 'day-to-day, week-to-week'
- Injury suffered ~1 month before Sept. 13 opener
- Our rank: Egbuka WR23, #68 overall
- McMillan also banged up; Godwin the lone healthy WR
Todd Bowles didn't exactly put Tampa Bay fantasy managers at ease this week. The Bucs head coach labeled receivers Emeka Egbuka and Jalen McMillan both "day-to-day, week-to-week" and declined to guarantee either would be ready for the Week 1 trip to Cincinnati on Sept. 13. Egbuka is dealing with a toe sprain picked up in a joint practice against the Jets — roughly a month before the opener.
That's the good news and the bad news wrapped into one vague word. Tampa is calling it a "toe sprain," not turf toe, and the distinction matters. A garden-variety sprain can cost a player one to three weeks — Terry McLaurin had a similar low-grade big-toe issue in August 2023 and started Week 1 20 days later, then played all 17 games. Turf toe is a different animal: Davante Adams missed four games and 38 days with one in 2019.
Why This Hurts More Than One Toe
The context is what makes this sting. Egbuka was set up to be Baker Mayfield's alpha with Mike Evans gone to San Francisco. Coming off a 63-catch, 938-yard, six-TD rookie year (194 PPR points in 2025), he'd flashed genuine WR1 upside — 25 catches, 445 yards and five scores through five games before a hamstring quieted him down the stretch. His form dipped late, running 6.3 fantasy points below his season average over his last five games in 2025.
Now the whole room is thin. McMillan is banged up too, leaving Chris Godwin — who has missed more games than he's played the last two seasons — as the only healthy piece of the projected top three. Cade Otton (59-572-1, 122 PPR points in 2025, our TE21) and pass-catching back Kenneth Gainwell give Mayfield outlets, but nobody replaces Egbuka's ability to win from the slot or outside in the intermediate zone.
The Fantasy Fallout
This one lands hardest on Mayfield, our QB12 (#26 overall) after 3,693 yards and 26 TDs in 2025. He's playing on the final year of his deal with talks paused, and a decimated receiver corps doesn't help his payday case. If Egbuka misses time, Mayfield's ceiling shrinks and his volume gets spread across less reliable hands.
For managers: don't panic-drop Egbuka (our WR23, #68 overall), but don't reach for him at ADP until we get clarity on whether this is a sprain or something worse. Treat him as a WATCH — hold if you've got the roster space, and let the next Bowles update tell you whether Week 1 is realistic. If you need a Bucs stash right now, Godwin's the safer floor bet while the WR depth chart sorts itself out.
