Tampa Bay's season just got a lot more complicated. With Baker Mayfield hurt, the Buccaneers are handing the offense to undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels — and his NFL debut in Sunday's 23-16 loss to Minnesota was rough. Daniels finished 0-of-3 through the air, scrambled once for nine yards, and capped it with a Hail Mary interception that sealed the win for the Vikings.
That's not the resume you want from the guy replacing a $165 million quarterback on a still-winless team. Mayfield sat as our #26 overall player (#12 at the position) before the injury, coming off a 274 PPR-point 2025 season (actual) with 3,693 yards and 26 touchdowns. Daniels, by contrast, has one snap of NFL film and it's all bad — but the fuller picture is more interesting than three empty pass attempts suggest.
Who Daniels Actually Is
The rookie turns 24 next month after a six-year college run at Kansas that ping-ponged between brilliant and injury-wrecked. He tossed 544 yards and five scores in a triple-OT loss to Arkansas, ran for 23 career touchdowns, and finished with 9,282 passing yards and a 67-31 TD-INT ratio. When healthy, he was a genuine dual-threat with a 4.65 forty. The warts are real too: turnovers piled up late in his career, with 19 picks and 18 fumbles over his final 24 games.
He beat out Connor Bazelak and Jake Browning to win the QB2 job outright in camp, and Tampa was confident enough to carry only Daniels and Mayfield to open the year. His preseason was clean if unspectacular — 27-of-44, one touchdown, no picks. Expect coordinator Zac Robinson to lean into the athleticism with bootlegs, rollouts and designed runs, especially with matchups against Green Bay and Dallas looming.
The Fantasy Fallout
Here's the silver lining for roster managers: the surrounding cast is legit. Emeka Egbuka (our #68 overall, #23 WR) is coming off a 194 PPR-point 2025 (actual), though he's dipped 6.3 points below his season average over his last five games. Bucky Irving (#122, #33 RB) keeps the run game alive, and Cade Otton offers a safe target floor. Whether Daniels can feed them consistently is the whole question — his ball placement and decision-making were shaky in college.
The move: sit Daniels everywhere until we see actual production. Mayfield was struggling before the injury, so the passing game's low bar means the skill players may not crater as much as you'd fear — hold Egbuka and Irving, and don't panic-drop Otton. If Daniels shows even modest rushing upside against two soft defenses, revisit him as a deep-league streamer. For now, though, he's a watch, not a start.
