The Chiefs are coming off a 6-11 season, and the numbers behind it aren't kind: Kansas City ranks 19th in the NFL in points per game since 2023. That's not a blip. It's a three-year stretch of below-average scoring from a team quarterbacked by one of the best players to ever do it, and it's the core problem the front office spent this offseason trying to fix.
The stat that should stop you cold: the Chiefs are the only team in the league without a single 1,000-yard rusher or receiver over the past three seasons. Mahomes has thrown for 11,698 yards since 2023 — the most ever in a three-year window without a 1,000-yard target. He's been carrying dead weight. He's also evolved from a 50-touchdown gunslinger into more of a manager, ranking 23rd in yards per attempt and 21st in passer rating over that span.
The explosiveness vanished after the Tyreek Hill trade. Mahomes had a league-high 41 deep touchdowns (20+ air yards) from 2018-21; he's managed just seven in the four years since, tied for 27th. Xavier Worthy's 4.21 speed was supposed to fix that. Instead he's caught 7 of 34 deep balls across two seasons — a 20.6% rate that's second-worst in the league among heavily-targeted deep men.
The Fixes On Paper
Kansas City made Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III the highest-paid free-agent running back ever at $14.4M per year, and the fit is loud. Chiefs backs posted a 3.0% explosive-run rate last season — fifth-worst by any team this century. Walker ripped off a 12+ yard run on 10.0% of his carries, second only to De'Von Achane among backs with 200+ totes, and his 27.6% missed-tackle rate trailed only Bijan Robinson. That's exactly the juice this room was missing behind Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt.
The other levers: a full year of Rashee Rice (a long shot — he's played just 28 of 51 possible career games, though his last 17 with real snaps prorate to a monster 120-1,377-10 line) and the return of OC Eric Bieniemy, who ran a league-best 30.1 PPG offense here from 2018-22. There's also the lurking health question. Mobile QBs coming off a torn ACL are a mixed bag; Burrow and Brady bounced back fast, Kyler Murray and RG3 didn't.
The Fantasy Angle
Buy Walker while the market still prices him as a Seattle-era back. He walks into a room that was bottom-five in rush yards (1,247), yards per carry (3.7) and tackles avoided (47) last season — meaning volume and goal-line work are his for the taking, and his explosive profile plays anywhere. Mahomes stays a mid-tier QB1 in single-QB leagues until the deep ball returns; don't reach. And Rice is pure upside dart, not a draft-day anchor — target him at a discount and let someone else eat the availability risk.
