Patrick Mahomes

Leg strength checks out and he's on track for Week 1 — grab him if drafters are nervous.

Key numbers
  • Mahomes: 3587 pass yds, 22 TD, 0 INT in 2025 (14 games)
  • Our NFL QB9, #19 overall entering 2026
  • Never landed on the active/PUP list in camp
  • Fields signed as high-end backup, our QB30
  • 422 rush yds, 5 rush TD in 2025 — legs are the swing factor

Andy Reid gave the update Kansas City managers wanted to hear on Wednesday: Patrick Mahomes looks strong coming off a major leg injury. Reid said Mahomes' feet were moving well and specifically pointed to the strength in his legs — the exact thing you watch first with a leg problem. That's not vague coach-speak. That's the head coach telling you the mobility is back.

The context matters. Mahomes never started camp on the active/PUP list, jumped in with the rookies last week, and is now practicing with veterans. He put up 3587 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and zero interceptions across 14 games in 2025, plus 422 rushing yards and five scores on the ground — good enough for 304 PPR points and our NFL QB9 ranking heading into 2026.

Reid said he's keeping a close eye on the small technique stuff, noting that the rehab work has focused on Mahomes' ability to push off laterally and straight ahead to escape pressure. He added that Mahomes is bending, throwing and trusting the leg to drive on it. For a quarterback whose fantasy ceiling leans on his legs, that trust is the whole ballgame.

Where Fields Fits

The Chiefs didn't leave themselves exposed. They brought in Justin Fields as a legitimate high-end backup — our QB30 and #128 overall. Fields posted 1259 passing yards, seven TDs and one pick across nine games in 2025, adding 383 rushing yards and four scores for 135 PPR points. He's insurance with rushing upside, but every signal points to Mahomes starting Week 1.

The Fantasy Angle

Mahomes finished 2025 as our QB9 despite the injury shadow, and his 2025 form dipped late (down 6.3 fantasy points per game over his last five). That, plus the leg question, is why some drafters will let him slide past his ranking. Reid's strength update is your green light to pounce.

Verdict: buy low on Mahomes. If nervous drafters push him down the board, take the discount on a top-10 quarterback who's tracking toward a Week 1 start. Fields is worth a late stash only in superflex or deep leagues as a contingency — there's no clear path to standalone value while Mahomes is upright.
