Mahomes Runs for a Score in Return, But Chiefs Lean on Walker vs Broncos
Mahomes is just 8-of-18 for 62 yards in his first game back from ACL surgery, while Kenneth Walker piles up 89 rushing yards at the half.

Patrick Mahomes is back, and his first points of the season came on his own legs — a 15-yard touchdown run capping Kansas City's opening drive against Denver. That's a notable sight from a guy who tore both the ACL and LCL in his left knee on Dec. 14 and went under the knife the very next day. The Chiefs lead 14-7 at halftime on Monday night.
The throwing arm, though, has been rusty. Mahomes sits at just 8-of-18 for 62 yards and a passing touchdown after an ugly 2-for-12 start. He's spread it around to six different receivers, but the volume through the air has been minimal. Rookie corner Mansoor Delane's early interception of Bo Nix set up that first scoring drive.
The other Chiefs touchdown looked more like the offense fantasy managers remember: an 80-yard, 10-play march finished by a 13-yard Rashee Rice catch-and-run. Rice posted 148 PPR points across just eight games in 2025 (rank #108, WR37), so any sign he's the go-to target matters — even if his last-five-game form ran 2.4 points below his season average.
The Walker Show
The real story so far is Kenneth Walker carrying the load while Mahomes shakes off the rust. Walker has 14 carries for 89 yards — tying the most rushes in a first half of any game Mahomes has started — plus two grabs for 16 yards. Kansas City is clearly protecting its quarterback by feeding the ground game, and that's a green light for Walker's usage.
On the Denver side, Nix is 12-of-17 for 98 yards with a touchdown and that early pick. He was our #22 overall player (QB11) coming off a 299-PPR 2025 that included 25 passing TDs and 5 on the ground. Evan Engram cashed a 19-yard touchdown reception, and Pat Bryant leads the receivers with four catches for 42 yards — encouraging given Bryant's last-five form ran 3.8 points above his 2025 average.
For fantasy purposes, don't panic on Mahomes's numbers — he's a QB1 the moment his timing returns, and the rushing floor is a bonus. Walker is the clearer takeaway: the workhorse split we saw here makes him a confident hold and a weekly starter. Rice stays a WR2/flex until the target share stabilizes, and Bryant's usage is worth monitoring as a deep-league dart throw.
