Christian McCaffrey has been absent from recent 49ers practices, and coach Kyle Shanahan wanted to kill the drama before it started. The reason isn't a contract, it isn't a re-aggravation of last year's leg trouble — it's muscle tightness, and Shanahan made a point of ruling out any money-related reason for the star back skipping Tuesday's joint session with the Chargers on Aug. 18.
Here's the line that matters for your draft board: Shanahan said that if this were a game week, McCaffrey would be out there. The 49ers are simply choosing caution in August to avoid turning a minor issue into a long-term one. With San Francisco's regular season not kicking off until the NFL's Australia game against the Rams on Thursday, Sept. 10, there's zero incentive to push a 30-year-old workhorse in a practice that doesn't count.
Why This Isn't a Red Flag Yet
McCaffrey is our No. 1 overall running back for 2026-27 drafts for a reason. He played all 17 games last season (2025), led the entire NFL in touches with 413, and finished second in scrimmage yards (2,126) behind only Bijan Robinson. That translated to 417 PPR points — the seventh-best fantasy season by a running back since 2001, per the historical PPR leaderboard.
The contract chatter isn't coming from nowhere, though. McCaffrey is set to earn $12.5 million this season, and the running back market just got reset around him: Jahmyr Gibbs landed a three-year, $67.5 million extension in Detroit, and Robinson signed for three years and $66.75 million in Atlanta. Shanahan insists McCaffrey's absence has nothing to do with those deals. Take him at his word for now.
The Fantasy Fallout
If you were hoping tightness plus contract noise would crater McCaffrey's ADP and hand you a discount, sorry — this isn't that. Nothing about a precautionary August rest day changes his ceiling, and the volume profile that produced 102 catches and 10 rushing scores last season (2025) is still intact. Keep monitoring the beat reports as we approach the Sept. 10 opener, but there's no reason to bump him down your board.
Bottom line: draft McCaffrey exactly where you had him. This is a HOLD. Just budget an appropriate handcuff late — if San Francisco is this careful with him in August, they'll be careful in December too, and you want the insurance if the tightness ever becomes something more.
