McConkey exits with chest injury as Chargers' new offense stalls vs. Cardinals
Ladd McConkey went down clutching his chest in a 26-14 loss, and Justin Herbert had nowhere to throw. Here's the fantasy fallout.

Chest injury exit clouds his Week 2 status — monitor practice reports.
- Chargers fell 26-14 as 9.5-point home favorites
- Herbert: 17-of-27, 209 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT, 3 sacks
- Brissett: 27-of-37, 277 yds, 1 TD for Arizona
- McBride: 9 catches, 95 yds vs Chargers
- Ryland drilled 4 field goals for the Cardinals
The Chargers rolled out Mike McDaniel's shiny new offense at SoFi Stadium on Sunday and mostly gave everyone indigestion. They lost 26-14 to a Cardinals team that won just three games in 2025, and the bigger problem for fantasy managers came late in the third quarter: star receiver Ladd McConkey left with a chest injury after leaping for a catch, lying on the turf while trainers checked him out.
McConkey had been the one thing working. Justin Herbert leaned on him early and hit him for a touchdown before the injury pulled the plug on that connection. Herbert finished 17-of-27 for 209 yards with a touchdown and a pick, sacked three times, and simply didn't have many options once McConkey went down and KeAndre Lambert-Smith exited with a hamstring injury.
The New Scheme Sputtered
McDaniel spent the offseason engineering ways to get the ball out of Herbert's hands faster and spare the franchise QB the punishment he took last year. Mission half-accomplished — Herbert absorbed fewer hits, but the pre-snap motion and imbalanced formations didn't translate into points. It was Jim Harbaugh's first Week 1 loss as an NFL head coach, snapping a record-tying six-game opening-week win streak.
Arizona, meanwhile, just kept punching. Jacoby Brissett was steady and efficient (27-of-37, 277 yards, one TD), rookie Jeremiyah Love scored the game's first touchdown, and tight end Trey McBride carved up the coverage for nine catches and 95 yards. A blocked punt in the fourth set up a short score that quieted the crowd, and Chad Ryland tacked on four field goals.
The Fantasy Fallout
Herbert's line was underwhelming, but context matters: he lost his top two healthy pass-catchers mid-game and still ranked as our No. 8 QB after posting 313 PPR points in 2025. He's a hold — this offense should smooth out. Brissett quietly delivered a usable QB2 day and is worth a bench stash in deeper leagues after his 233-PPR 2025 season. McBride, as always, is a locked-in start.
The real question is McConkey. Until we get a practice report, he's a WATCH — don't drop him, but line up a contingency plan for Week 2. If the chest injury lingers, whoever inherits Herbert's targets becomes a sneaky streamer, though Lambert-Smith's own hamstring muddies that picture. Keep an eye on the wire early this week.
