Steelers Put Roman Wilson on IR as Pittsburgh's WR Room Thins Out
Wilson lands on IR with a finger injury, joining Michael Pittman Jr. on the shelf. That funnels even more work toward DK Metcalf (49 PPR pts this season).

Thinning WR room cements Metcalf as Pittsburgh's clear No. 1 target.

- Metcalf: 19 rec, 225 yds, 1 TD, 49 PPR pts in 2026 (5 games)

Pittsburgh's receiver depth took another hit. The Steelers placed Roman Wilson on injured reserve with a finger injury he suffered in the Week 5 loss to the Colts, and he now joins Michael Pittman Jr. — our No. 65 overall and WR20 — on the shelf. That's two bodies gone from a pass-catching group that was already thin, and it leaves the 3-2 Steelers scrambling ahead of their trip to Tampa Bay.
To patch the holes, Pittsburgh elevated Brandon Smith and Brandon Johnson to the 53-man roster and signed running back Lew Nichols. Johnson's career fantasy footprint is basically nonexistent — 1 catch for 9 yards across three games back in 2024 — so don't expect a depth signing to move your lineup needle. These are warm bodies, not weapons.
What It Means For DK Metcalf
Every injury in this room points the same direction: more volume for DK Metcalf. He's already the engine of this passing game, piling up 19 catches for 225 yards and a touchdown through five games in 2026 — 49 PPR points and counting. With Pittman and Wilson both out, there's simply no one left to siphon targets away from him.
There's one more wrinkle worth tracking. Tight end Pat Freiermuth landed on the injury report with a calf issue, which would strip away yet another trusted option if he can't go. On the brighter side, Metcalf was cleared off the report after an illness and is set to play in Tampa.
The Fantasy Takeaway
Wilson wasn't a rosterable asset in standard formats, so his IR stint is mostly a depth-chart story. The real action is at the top: Metcalf is a locked-in start every week, and this latest shuffle only strengthens the case. Hold Pittman if you've got the IR slot for him, but there's no reason to chase any of Pittsburgh's elevations off the wire. Keep an eye on the Freiermuth tag before locking lineups.
