Watson Edges Sanders in Browns' Preseason QB Mess, But Nobody Wins

The Browns dropped their preseason opener 34-10 in Chicago, and the only real drama was the quarterback derby nobody wants to be watching but everybody is. Deshaun Watson took the first-half reps and went 11-of-15 for 126 yards, engineering all 10 of Cleveland's points before a strip sack from Jamree Kromah sent his afternoon sideways. Shedeur Sanders got the second half and delivered exactly the kind of split-screen you'd expect from a rookie: a couple of dazzling throws, one ugly interception.

Context matters here. Watson hasn't taken a regular-season snap since Oct. 20, 2024 after two torn Achilles, and he's on the final year of that five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed deal that has aged like milk. Sanders, meanwhile, won three of five starts down the stretch as a rookie and even snuck onto the Pro Bowl as an alternate — but he also led the NFL with 10 interceptions and posted a 57% completion rate, second-worst in the league.

Watson's tape was fine right up until it wasn't. He hit Jerry Jeudy on a 14-yard dig, found rookie Denzel Boston on third-and-5, and capped an 81-yard march with a KC Concepcion end-around touchdown — a drive Dylan Sampson jump-started by turning a checkdown into a 43-yard gain. Then Kromah blew up his throwing motion, the ball fluttered backward, and the offense went three-and-out on its next two possessions.

Sanders Flashes, Then Flops

Sanders opened the third quarter by ripping a 24-yard play-action strike to Gage Larvadain, then stood in against heavy pressure to hit Luke Floriea for 35 on third-and-13. Encouraging stuff — until a red-zone stall, a three-and-out, and a Beanie Bishop Jr. interception on his third drive ended the audition. Dillon Gabriel followed him in and promptly threw a pick of his own, which pretty much settles the 'what about Gabriel?' question for now.

If you're scoring it, Watson takes the day on a technicality: he faced Chicago's starters, produced the points, and was the only Browns QB who didn't gift the ball away. Sanders had the splashier throws but the worst one, too. Neither performance screamed 'starter,' which is the whole problem in Cleveland.

For fantasy purposes, none of these guys belongs on your radar in standard formats. Watson sits at QB39 in our rankings (No. 226 overall) and put up just 85 PPR points across seven games in 2024. Gabriel scored 74 PPR points over 10 games in 2025 and ranks QB42. The only mild sleeper worth a bench stash in deep dynasty leagues is Sampson, who's trending up (+2.2 fantasy points over his last five games versus his 2025 average) if a passing game ever materializes. Bottom line: keep Sanders on the watch list — he starts against Buffalo next Saturday and needs momentum — but don't spend a roster spot on this quarterback situation until someone actually wins the job.
