Key numbers
  • 124 rush yds, 1 TD on 17 carries vs Texans in Week 8
  • Just 3.6 YPC over Giants' first five games
  • 70 PPR pts in 7 games, RB25 in our 2026 ranks
  • Giants cut Najee Harris, put Tyrone Tracy Jr. on IR
  • Benched prior week: 6 snaps, zero carries after a fumble

Cam Skattebo just put up his best game of the 2026 season — 17 carries, 124 yards and a touchdown against the Texans — and the backstory makes it a lot heavier than a stat line. In a new hour-long documentary released this week by the Giants, Skattebo revealed he feared doctors would have to amputate his foot after the right ankle dislocation, open tibia fracture and ruptured deltoid ligament that ended his 2025 season. He admitted earlier this year he'd even weighed retirement.

That context matters for how you read his slow start. Skattebo averaged a grim 3.6 yards per carry across the Giants' first five games, which is understandable for a running back whose whole game depends on cutting and changing direction coming off that kind of lower-leg trauma. Through seven games in 2026 he's logged 418 rushing yards and two scores, plus 11 catches for 76 yards — good for 70 PPR points and our RB25 for the season so far.

Skattebo described a strange pregame moment before the injury, saying he felt lifted out of his own body while praying with teammates in the showers. He also recalled the moment the doctor snapped his dislocated ankle back into place as a wave of relief — and said he nearly passed out in the X-ray room when they cut his shoe and sock off and he saw how badly the skin had torn.

Why This Matters For Your Roster

The job is his now. The Giants cut Najee Harris — who managed just 99 rushing yards and nine PPR points across five games (our RB79) — and placed Tyrone Tracy Jr. on injured reserve. Tracy had actually been trending up, averaging +1.9 fantasy points over his final five games versus his season mark, but he's off the field. That leaves Skattebo as the clear early-down and goal-line option in New York.

The one caveat: he needs to keep the Houston efficiency going. A week before that breakout he was buried — six snaps, zero carries following a costly fumble — so the leash hasn't been infinitely long. But coaches don't bench the guy they just handed a clean backfield to over one good week, and volume tends to cure a lot.

Fantasy verdict: buy low while the recovery narrative still has people nervous. Skattebo is the unquestioned lead back on a team with no real competition behind him, and that usage ceiling is worth more than his RB25 tag suggests. Start him as a flex with RB2 upside this week, and pounce if a manager in your league is still pricing him off the slow September.
