Full practice is a great sign, but keep an eye on his Week 1 status.

Key numbers
  • Practiced in full uniform Sunday
  • Missed ~2 weeks with leg tightness
  • Our RB1 after 417 PPR points in 2025
  • Week 1 vs Rams in Australia on Sept. 10
  • Kittle activated off PUP same day

The most important sight of the 49ers' Sunday practice had nothing to do with a highlight rep. Christian McCaffrey was on the field in full uniform, roughly two weeks after leg tightness pulled him out of the practice rotation. San Francisco's RB1 is moving again, and that's the news every manager who spent a first-round pick on him needed.

Context matters here. McCaffrey is our No. 1 running back and our No. 1 overall player after posting 417 PPR points in 2025 — 1,202 rushing yards and 10 scores on the ground, plus 102 catches for 924 yards and seven more touchdowns across 17 games. That's the kind of dual-threat ceiling that anchors a lineup, which is exactly why the last two weeks put a knot in a lot of stomachs.

The nervousness wasn't overblown. San Francisco has stayed vague on what "tightness" actually means, and McCaffrey dealt with something similar heading into 2024 — a calf issue that eventually cost him the entire preseason and the team's first eight regular-season games. Once bitten, twice cautious. A full-pads practice doesn't erase that memory, but it's a meaningful step in the other direction.

It's also not a Week 1 guarantee. The 49ers open against the Rams in Australia on Sept. 10, and being able to practice on Aug. 24 isn't the same as being cleared to play. Still, you'd rather see this than another closed-door absence. The next time McCaffrey talks to reporters should tell us plenty about where his leg actually stands.

The other domino: George Kittle came off the Physically Unable to Perform list the same day. Kittle is our TE13 (No. 102 overall) after 57 catches for 628 yards and seven touchdowns in just 11 games last season — a per-game rate that plays up any week he's healthy. If both he and McCaffrey suit up in Australia, the 49ers' offense gets back to full strength in a hurry.

The fantasy call is HOLD, and it's an easy one. There's no scenario where you're moving McCaffrey off a full-practice report, and panic-selling now would be lighting draft capital on fire. Do stay glued to the Week 1 injury designations — his 2024 history means you want a viable RB2 stashed as insurance before kickoff. But the arrow is pointing up, and that's the whole story.
